@jargon Well, props to you for starting others out, whichever of us is right in this discussion! :-)

I'm Installing #Debian and #LinuxMint, under #VirtualBox, and will compare their usability with my lovely #Ubuntu !linux !ubuntu !fsf !gnu

@amanjpro !Mint is very usable compared to !Ubuntu, since it's based on 10.10. #Debian's good, but have to fight to get everything to work.

@ericdbarry !Debian's complexity also helps you on learning useful tools and tricks :)

@ericdbarry: Indeed, #Debian seems to be tough to make it up (installing is too long(& complex)), and as for #Mint I've mixed impressions

@ericdbarry: I was hoping you would have had a much better experience with Debian. Debian has not let me down yet, thankfully.

@amanjpro If you have them virtualized, they'll probably be slower...

    • Amanj Sherwany Amanj Sherwany diablomarcus

@diablomarcus: Indeed, #LinuxMint had some lag, but !Debian was amazing (almost as fast as my host OS), I think #Debian is an ugly good #OS!

@danielmarti No doubt. My experience might have been better if I used the 32bit version of #Debian 6.

@amanjpro I've liked #Debian in the past, just didn't work for my application. #Mint 10 is based on #Ubuntu 10.10, both gave me grief.

@rivenathos It worked great until I started testing multiple distros in VM. Started locking up. Meh, I have to use #ubuntu for work anyway.

@jargon This is a bit counter-productive. I can, you can, my bro can't. If #linux doesn't care about him, hdw mans won't care about linux.

@jargon: I am using Ubuntu & used to use other distros too, but installing Debian, took almost an hour, & needed too many clicks!

@jargon I don't think it is hard. I can imagine my bro thinking `Partitioning? What to do? Ahhh!' Most users don't know + lack confidence.

@jargon: (cont'd) and Debian took as twice as Mint, I also updated the Mint OS, before the Debian installation finishes!! you decide now :)

@jargon, one thing contributing to #Windows' #success was that "Windows is hard to #install" never got a "then it's not for you" reponse.

@jargon: (the missing part, sorry) I installed Mint (Ubuntu based) and Debian on the same machine, using virtual box, same specification

@jargon Mostly agree. Point is, he wouldn't. Most users never install apps, let alone OS. Hell, my partner has 2 PhDs; never installed app.

@jargon Don't share your #ubuntu hate (but getting closer). Yet, I value it as a better solution for the average user.

@jargon We do live in a world where some educated people think use of a terminal a sign of black-hat hackery :-( http://ur1.ca/3chd

@jargon: good to hear that it was good for you, to tell the truth, I liked how it was performing after installation (more than Mint)

@jargon: the last time I heard, Linux is not yours, so you cannot kick me out, who knows maybe Im a great user! with a different taste!

@jargon: If the last thing that you want to hear, is complains about Linux, then why do you answer me, just pretend that you didn't hear me!

    • Amanj Sherwany Amanj Sherwany

@jargon: And, as for the VBox, not everyone has extra boxes to install another distro to try it out before he decides it suits his taste!

@jargon Most user don't have a linux using sysadmin friend to guide. You're doing right, but maybe *your* cases are the rare ones?

@jargon Oh, and point of PhDs was to establish at least average intelligence and intellectual curiosity, not some BS credentialism.
