What do you use @pm? I can't remember now. I have Fedora in the back of my mind.

      @bugabundo skim :p

@bugabundo add a key with a very long command, then add a source which is different for each version and then finally install

@pm why do you not want people to use !ubuntu? No one (I don't think) is trying to get you to switch.

    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Douglas A. Whitfield

@daw I just hate that right now everyone thinks that linux == ubuntu and that theres no other choice

      Wednesday, 15-Jul-09 23:50:49 UTC
    • silner silner

@pm #Gentoo's the last major source based distro I haven't looked at yet actually.

      Wednesday, 15-Jul-09 23:51:04 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier

@bugabundo no, I would just create trusted repos with packages that are pending to get into the main repos

      Wednesday, 15-Jul-09 23:51:37 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier silner

@silner is there really any other ? :S

      Wednesday, 15-Jul-09 23:52:08 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier

@bugabundo its not like u would need to install ie. If that would be the case I would find that as stupid

      Wednesday, 15-Jul-09 23:55:48 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier

@bugabundo anyway im tired of saying the same things. Just read my blog post and do one or reply if u dont agree

@pm I thought Slackware was? I realise you may be being ironic there but I'm still a very recent #Linux convert.

      Wednesday, 15-Jul-09 23:59:49 UTC
    • silner silner

@pm I've been using #Linux for just over a year and I still feel very inexperienced.

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:02:05 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier silner

@silner I dont really know anything about Slackware, so im not sure. The only other source-based distros I know are Lunar and Sorcerer

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:02:17 UTC
    • silner silner

@pm I really did find #Slackware hard going. So much so that if was the only #Linux distro I would probably use #PCBSD

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:06:09 UTC
    • Carlos A Perilla Carlos A Perilla silner

@silner No, slackware isnt source based it just provide a very small package selection the rest is up to you to compile.

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:07:52 UTC
    • silner silner Carlos A Perilla

@deepspawn Ah that's what puzzled me. You would need a very powerful system and a lot of time to arrive at a usable system?

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:11:36 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Carlos A Perilla

@deepspawn Am I right in your opinion to say that Slackware is the hardest distro to use ?

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:13:27 UTC

      Carlos Perilla Carlos Perilla

@pm I don't know if hardest, I find it quite easy but requires a lot of handwork

    • Craig Cabrey Craig Cabrey Ubuntu users

@pm it's not like !ubuntu endorses that, it's just people's perceptions

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:17:06 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Craig Cabrey

      @cabrey endorse what ?

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:17:26 UTC
    • Carlos A Perilla Carlos A Perilla silner

@silner No it gives a pretty good base packages upto kde and a other lot of wms and xapps

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:18:19 UTC
    • Craig Cabrey Craig Cabrey

@pm the fact that people think ubuntu = linux

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:18:31 UTC
    • Carlos A Perilla Carlos A Perilla silner

@silner but if you want something outside that, the usual way is download source and compile by hand

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:19:01 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Craig Cabrey

@cabrey they dont ? I dont follow that community, but I always had the feeling that its more about getting ubuntu users than linux users

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:19:37 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Craig Cabrey

@cabrey let me rephrase : its more about getting windows users to switch to ubuntu than to linux

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:19:58 UTC
    • Carlos A Perilla Carlos A Perilla silner

@silner But there is stuff like slapt or slackbuilds, you can use those if you want, slackware doesnt care about what you do after install

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:20:07 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Carlos A Perilla

@deepspawn Interesting. I had never really read anything about slack

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:20:45 UTC
    • Derek Otto Derek Otto

@pm a lot has changed in recent years. I haven't had any issues with packages since slackbuilds.org came into being

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:21:41 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Carlos A Perilla

@deepspawn when I was looking at distros a few years ago it really was harder to use than now it seems

@pm But stuff like ubuntu, fedora, suse annoying and hard to use.

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:26:17 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Carlos A Perilla

@deepspawn just like me easy to use is how easy is it to have the environment you want and the flexibility u need

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:27:34 UTC
    • Douglas A. Whitfield Douglas A. Whitfield Ubuntu users

@pm do people really think that? I use !ubuntu and I don't think that...

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:38:36 UTC
    • Douglas A. Whitfield Douglas A. Whitfield

@pm in fact, my research indicates most companies think linux == Red Hat

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:39:03 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Douglas A. Whitfield

@daw well, linux == Red Hat or Centos for companies :p

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:40:32 UTC
    • Patrick Haverkamp Patrick Haverkamp Carlos A Perilla

@pm @deepspawn ppa and the gpg keys are a pain... Things like aur and slackbuilds make more sense to me

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 00:45:31 UTC
    • Maxime Pelletier Maxime Pelletier Patrick Haverkamp

@alphakamp quick, tell that to bugabundo, it seems someone agrees with me ! :D

@pm well, the company I work at uses !ubuntu. (Although, we also use RHEL)

@deepspawn yeah that's the trouble. I use a lot of non standard software and it takes too long to compile all of it. Or I'm time-poor :)

      Thursday, 16-Jul-09 10:56:03 UTC
    • silner silner Carlos A Perilla

@deepspawn I wasn't aware of those. I had vaguely heard of slapt but never investigated. If I'm ever time-richer I'll investigate :)

@kouk eh.. nah that doesnt really help either, but im back to using firefox now anways :)
