Going to try to claim !lo donations as tax-deductible: wish me luck. Ugh, 1040 woes.

@alisonchaiken, I urge you *not* to claim !lo donations as tax-deductible. They don't have 501(c)(3) or similar USA status! (IANATA)

@bkuhn Now bradley, what did @kaz tell you about offering free legal advice on the web?

@alisonchaiken, actually, it wouldn't be legal advice regardless, it's accounting advice. Lawyers don't control the universe, you know.

@bkuhn Could you let them know this? They don't seem to realise... ;-)

@yamanickill, I've told many a lawyer that. Sadly most lawyers seem to believe no one should make policy but them. It's quite #disturbing!

@fontana, if you feel like writing *that* Form 1023, I suggest you do so. I think it's tough to claim !lo as religion, OTOH #Scientology is.

@bkuhn @fontana I strongly object to that. I do not like religions.

@bkuhn What? #lo isn't a religion? Maybe I should dismantle my alter then.

@bkuhn Yeah, scary. As far as I know, their job is to interpret the law...not make it...but maybe I'm wrong ;-)

@yamanickill, problem in USA is that most legislators are lawyers. Law school is seen as a way to "get policy credentials". It's #disturbing

@fontana,re: !lo like Roman Catholic mass: LOL, in my head, I adapted Catholic mass response texts to fit LO (would be sacrilege to dent it)

@fontana, I would note a key difference btw Roman Catholic mass & !LO: @fabsh gives a homily in *every* section, not just at homily time.

@fontana, what I find #disturbing about lawyers controlling policy is attempts to do so in fields where they lack expertise (e.g. Free Sw).

@fontana,+1! I *used* to defer to lawyers on policy. #FLOSS hackers trust expertise;problem:legal expertise's more limited than most realize

@fontana That's a general problem though; far too many corporate employees treat in-house counsel as a source of instruction not advice.

@fontana, my fear is that the failed effort has not yet fully failed. I know many lawyers out there attempting constantly to assert control.

@fontana, well, I've helped some hacker-focused orgs become Plaintiffs; not sure what else to do to have hackers make law for #FLOSS. :)
