@funkatron @abraham I'm a statusnet/identi.ca n00b. Has anyone tried taking the status.net/open-source stuff to decentralized deployments?
-
@claylo what do you mean "to decentralized deployments"?
-
@samatjain part of Twitter's problem is that it's centrally controlled. Wondering if status.net/identi.ca is a way to get away from that.
-
@claylo That is precisely one of StatusNet's goals. Still a tad shaky, but getting there (protocol info): http://ostatus.org/
-
@samatjain ah, excellent. thanks for the link, and the welcome! :)
-
@claylo Can download StatusNet, setup your own hosting, and subscribe/send messages to others. Others that've done it: http://ur1.ca/2rkdk
-
@claylo There's also Posterous/Tumblr/etc federation via PubSubHubHub, but I don't know details and AFAIK it's very fragile
-
@abraham @clayo "In the future" you should enter someone's e-mail address in your app, and WebFinger/similar protocols lookup profiles
-
@claylo It's real problems: (1) Most people misunderstand it; (2) Site operators don't have reason to implement it well (and they DON'T!)
-
@samatjain do you have a link on the solutions? I gave up on OpenID a long time ago. Agree it's potentially solvable; never saw proof
-
@samatjain referring to Status.net or OpenID ... or both?
-
@claylo No… saw it on a W3 wiki somewhere. W3 appears (mostly) to moved onto WebID, though
-
@claylo OpenID. When OStatus/StatusNet become mainstream, hopefully it can avoid the same PR issues
