@reality Why, Luke? Why?
-
@mo6020 Bloody Skype kept crashing on Arch :(
-
@reality That's no excuse. But, it'd be annoying.
-
@reality LMAO
-
@satipera Get a job, you.
-
@reality That is the 3rd time hippy student :-)
-
@reality You're _supposed_ to call him a hipster.
-
@reality Isn't Skype proprietary? Aren't there a variety of Voice-Over-Internet-Protocols that are *free* ... perhaps a new VOIP?
-
@laurelrusswurm he is out buying beer so I will answer for him. Unfortunately this is one area where proprietary is better(for the moment).
-
@laurelrusswurm No, Linux is of far higher quality than Windows. Skype is just better than the alternatives ATM
-
@laurelrusswurm It's like IE, floss will inevitably catch up and leave it more dead than the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reputation.
-
@reality The technical quality may appear to be better, but the cost in freedom (esp if they are burrowing into your processor) is too high
-
@laurelrusswurm But rhetoric doesn't win over practicality. It's a free software *movement* -- Aren't you a Windows user, anyway?
-
@satipera No, it won't, because skype is exclusionary.
-
@reality Deep breaths, calm down mate you will mess yourself up.
-
@laurelrusswurm The point is it's a choice between "podcast" or "no podcast." That is all.
-
@reality Yes, because I was stupidly sucked in when I didn't know better. That's one reason why I know how much of a problem escaping is.
-
@laurelrusswurm I take it you're stuck with using it for your novel?
-
@laurelrusswurm I take it you're stuck with using it for your novel?
-
@laurelrusswurm We attempt to make up for this by excluding all Twitter users and MP3 listeners. Does this help ?
-
@reality Yes.
-
@laurelrusswurm So your choice is novel, or no novel and a healthy dose of freedom. It's the same kind of thing
-
@reality My novel was written in free and I stupidly switched into windows because it was "necessary." A mistake I made once & won't repeat.
-
@reality nasty especially from someone who dented and graciously apologised for using windows today, calm down.
-
@satipera I'm not trying to be nasty, I just don't like being attacked for it. I wouldn't have used it if it wasn't The Way
-
@satipera good to hear :)
-
@reality Nice one, mate for stoking the fires. @davidmarsden - please prepare the 'Fire Drill' sample for its first outing in #tinap #3.
-
@reality clever people learn from the mistakes of others rather than repeating them
-
@laurelrusswurm I'm not clever, then. I had fun making a podcast though.
-
@reality I cant speak for LWurm but I would be very surprised if you were being attacked, I did not read it that way,
-
@andyc exclusionary networks are monopolies, and even if they start out "benevolent" I've never heard an instance of remaining so
-
@satipera It is FreedomPolice, man.
-
@reality i think you're terribly clever.
-
@reality Freedom Police, there to control not promote :-(
-
@laurelrusswurm In business, it's known as 'first mover advantage'. And it gets worse, Skype willl try to exploit it. Life's not fair is it?
-
@andyc No it isn't; and we can continue to repeat the mistakes of the past or we can learn from them.
-
@laurelrusswurm terrible, eh
-
@laurelrusswurm Skype are the market leader in VOIP technology. Please don't try to pretend otherwise. You can learn but you can't undo.
-
@reality actually mumble is pretty sweet for voip, just no video...
-
@laurelrusswurm It is not a question of market leader.
-
@laurelrusswurm ...because identi.ca completely fufils my microblogging needs. I'll always support freedom & the underdog but it has to work
-
@satipera I agree.
-
@reality The intention was never to attack. People keep telling me that Ubuntu isn't free enough, that ARCH is the ultimate.
-
@laurelrusswurm I think it's good that you stirred around a bit here tonight on the subject!! :)
-
@reality Just curious, why is Linux is of higher quality than Windows.
-
@laurelrusswurm on a separate note, have you used Evernote any?
-
@maloki it wasn't on purpose. :(
-
@laurelrusswurm Heretic you should know this :-)
-
@laurelrusswurm security, speed, size, appearance......
-
@laurelrusswurm But Arch does not use a Free kernel, for ultimate FREEDOM you need to use Trisquel or something
-
@maloki I've never heard of it. If it's VOIP, only one I've ever even tried was skype, which did not uninstall well... left skype sludge
-
@tekk I didn't phrase that well... what i mean was how could it come to pass that free software like Linux could be better than proprietary
-
@reality Surely you mean FREEDOM!!!!!1!11!one!
-
@laurelrusswurm !parabola is the !libre version of Arch. I use it.
-
@laurelrusswurm laying aside the philosophical issues for a moment I don't necessarily believe that Linux is better tha…
-
@laurelrusswurm well I was going to get to a point, just wanted to ask you if you used it :P but clearly you haven't
-
@laurelrusswurm it doesn't have anything to do with the skype conversation
-
@laurelrusswurm since I rarely take the time to sit down and work on stuff for my book. the proofing and so forth.
-
@laurelrusswurm the idea is that if i put it in evernote I can work on it from the computer, from the phone, wherever I am
-
@maloki so it's notebook software... how does it synch across platforms... is it cloud based?
-
@laurelrusswurm Arch isn't Free either. rather than Ubuntu, try Trisquel; rather than Arch, try Parabola
