@chewbocka I've got an AT&T BBerry. Gettimg messages to the phone was easy. Sending from the phone was a lot harder. It works now. =)

@damienhull how did you get sms working with laconica. maybe we can bug @evan to do it on here :) (identica + sms on iphone sucks)
-
@vrillusions I run an SMS -> Laconi.ca gateway, which is open source. Would that help you?
-
@jontheniceguy problem is obtaining an actual sms number, unless the gateway uses some free or cheap sms provider
-
@vrillusions How about hooking up a phone to your PC, and offering the service (for inbound SMS only) to the community? :)
-
@jontheniceguy before laconica I wanted to do my own µblog site because twitter annoyed me, then I saw that sms codes are like $1500/mo :(
-
@vrillusions sms in should be free, sms out is expensive, but I guess if you're in control, then you can send as much or little as you want.
-
@jontheniceguy depends on carrier. AT&T charges for both receiving and sending sms, sms credits goes towards both, etc. some don't though
-
@vrillusions If you've got a pre-pay sim and phone, then there's code at http://sf.net/projects/laconicatools for #smsToLaconica.

@jontheniceguy thanks. I also found an open source sms gateway called kannel http://www.kannel.org/ #sms

@vrillusions #smsToLaconica needs a phone, a SIM card, some way to connect it to a PC and then PHP, PHP-Curl and MySQL. It works OK :)
-
@vrillusions Have you seen LaTwit? http://latwit.mac65.com/
-
@evan yep but I like the "instant gratification" sms has, plus I have unlimited txt messaging :)
-
@vrillusions so you'd rather use SMS than a dedicated mobile client?
-
@evan yep, because for mobile client you have to have that app open to see updates. I guess once apple gets that message push working...
-
@evan then the mobile clients would be WAY more useful
-
@vrillusions: I did it through email on my phone. I wish they had an SMS number I could txt to. *sigh*
-
@evan, heh, I don't think LaTwit will run on many phones, ;) Even if I had an iPhone (which I don't want) I'd prefer real SMS
-
@gamerchick02 yeah I tried that at one point, but with iphone each incoming message is a new "conversation". was really annoying
-
@evan I have a Motorola RAZR v3xx and would much prefer SMS than a dedicated client. Give me a nicer phone and I'll change my story.
