Even Chris DiBona w/ his secret data admits that GPLv3 is taking over fast (> 50%) and #AGPLv3 is growing very very fast. #oscon !oscon

@bkuhn You can do interesting stuff even with non-secret data from Google: license-info.appspot.com cursecode.appspot.com !OSCON

@bkuhn Unfortunately, all I hear lately are people hating on the GPL. It saddens me a little.

@bkuhn If only Google Code would allow projects hosted on their site to be licensed as AGPLv3. I hope we see some change there.

@metajack, @bkuhn: Im one of the haters. One reason: folks who ask me to change LGPL code to GPL so that it will be more free.

@hildjj Ill concede that one. But that is hating on zealots not on the license, no? :)

@hildjj, I rarely ask project license change if it's already GPL-compatible license. I'd never advocate LGPL->GPL, but may ask for LGPLv3. ☺

@metajack, @bkuhn: I want the freedom to choose whichever license I want. GPL takes that freedom away.

    • Jack Moffitt Jack Moffitt Joe Hildebrand

@hildjj Why should you be able to use whatever license you want on other peoples code? You can license your own code freely.

@hildjj, #GPL doesn't take that freedom away. You can opt out of the GPL by not using it or deriving from software under it. #oscon !oscon

@metajack, @bkuhn: dont always get a chance to opt out. example: employee copy/pastes from GPL code carelessly.

@metajack and how many of us write all of our code completely from scratch

      Thursday, 23-Jul-09 17:04:24 UTC
    • Matt Miller Matt Miller Joe Hildebrand

@hildjj thats not a good example, since that would violate just about any license (other than BSD)

    • Joe Hildebrand Joe Hildebrand Jack Moffitt

@metajack: the INTENT of the GPL is to attack my freedoms. Thats what its FOR.

      Thursday, 23-Jul-09 17:05:02 UTC
    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Joe Hildebrand

@hildjj, I've never seen nor heard of case where someone was "trapped" b/c of that occurrence. Still, how are stupid employees #GPL's fault?

      Thursday, 23-Jul-09 17:05:32 UTC
    • Matt Miller Matt Miller Joe Hildebrand , Jack Moffitt

@metajack @hildjj better to say, I can only license my code as GPL if Im using (tightly or loosely) using other GPL code

@linuxwolf: good point re: violation of any license

@metajack and that seems less free, not more

      Thursday, 23-Jul-09 17:06:52 UTC
    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Joe Hildebrand

@hildjj, A document that's not a law can't "attack" you. You don't like #GPL, so you don't use it or associate yourself with it. Simple.

@bkuhn: do you deny that one of the main intents of the GPL is to create more GPL software through various coercions?

@bkuhn Your view of GPL as harmless applies only if you accept the legitimacy of copyright law in the first place...some of us don't.
