   @davidmn !Ubuntu 10.10 had a netbook edition. To help the user with not having to remember two/three different setups, unity was brought in.

     @davidmn there was also the issue of GNOME 3 having problems with closed-source gfx drivers, and Unity being a Compiz plug-in, hence working

     @davidmn To be precise they went with unity instead of gnome-shell. AFAIK 11.10 will have GNOME3
