@davidmn there was also the issue of GNOME 3 having problems with closed-source gfx drivers, and Unity being a Compiz plug-in, hence working

@davidmn: Two reasons : Them and GNome aren't able to work together enough, and they want there identity

@davidmn To be precise they went with unity instead of gnome-shell. AFAIK 11.10 will have GNOME3
