@mmuman also Photoshop is proprietary software, and there *are* good FLOSS alternatives
-
@sazius Yes, so is Flash, this non-web abomination…
-
@mmuman true, which isn't perhaps as easy to replace... but I've managed fine without Flash for some time now, though :)
-
@sazius Still have to enable it way too often here :( Hopefully they'll come up to #html5. btw, nice one http://diveintohtml5.org/video.html
-
@mmuman I've replaced it with Linterna Magica for youtube, vimeo: http://e-valkov.org/linterna-magica/ and gnash works w/ simple Flash sites
-
@sazius I'm used to http://code.google.com/p/cclive/ ; On Haiku Gnash should run but I never tried.
-
@mmuman OK, great tip! I've sometimes used youtube-dl, but cclive seems to be a more general script.

@sazius @mmuman for #Fx4, the bests are (afaik) ur1.ca/2qpw ur1.ca/46yy0ur1.ca/46yxt ur1.ca/3rxj0 ur1.ca/43oin (GM) ur1.ca/3roxg (addon)
-
@sazius never tried this one. Thanks for the link. #Bookmarked But beware of #gnash : it's aimed to run binary SWF files (often proprietary)
-
@gnuzer no problem, I think it was @akfoerster who reminded me of Linterna Magica some time ago :)
-
@mmuman What do you suggest ?
-
@gnuzer That they just do how they should, <video><object><embed src="foo.{flv|ogv|webm}"><a href="foo.flv">…
-
@mmuman yes, but the fact is that they don't. As users, we don't have better choice than those little hacks...
-
@gnuzer boycotting wouldn't help either, but sending mails en masse might. most of them already have test html5 players.
-
@mmuman I find contacting them on twitter is handy - lets them know more people out there want video without Flash, html5 w/o h264
-
@jancborchardt I agree 100% with you. You totally nailed OMG Ubuntu's attitude. The fact that @jonobacon supports that makes me sick....
-
♺ @jancborchardt: My response was similar: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/12/creative-suite-for-linux-an-update/#comment-112993574

If you need Photoshop to do your graphic work, you are probably not a good designer in the first place. !q @jancborchardt
-
@fabsh @jancborchardt I liked the comment from the guy who does This Week In Linux: That it's nothing to get worked up about; we have tools.
-
@mjjzf Huh? Which one?
-
@mjjzf Never knew of that show. Let me guess..... Not edited on Linux? ;)
-
@fabsh Well, he looks like the Mac-owning type. He does good things sometimes, I quite liked his Fedora presentation not too long ago.
-
@mjjzf I'll keep an eye on it. ;)
-
@fabsh I consider a site that delivers timely and relevant Ubuntu news to be a pretty good thing.
-
@jancborchardt remember, OMG! Ubuntu! is not an official Ubuntu website - if you have a complaint re. CoC, complain to the Community Council
-
@jancborchardt That is a great show. I am trying out TED as my primary source of video...
-
@jonobacon It is. I just think we should encourage F/OSS work instead of supporting pipe dreams about companies that don't want our money.
-
@jancborchardt actually, the complaint has triggered a lot of internal discussion in the CC surrounding how far and wide the CoC is applied.
-
@jancborchardt I don't care for the CoC but I think OMG's journalistic integrity is sketchy at best. I care about that.
-
@fabsh not everything thinks like you, pal, some think that top-tier apps like CS would be a valuable addition to Ubuntu users.
-
@jonobacon So you call the fact of regardless hyping relevant news?
-
@jancborchardt I did. Pioneer One, Zenith, Yes Men...
-
@jonobacon Is that based on your knowledge of design apps? IMHO only Lightroom would be irreplacable and that isn't a CS product I think.
-
@fabsh nope, based on my experience of what people consistently have queried about since I got involved in Open Source.
-
@jonobacon Lots of people want lots of things. The question is is it based on actual facts?
-
@jonobacon Most of the people in that thread couldn't draw a chicken in either Inkscape, Illustrator, the GIMP or Photoshop I'd wager.
-
@fabsh I don't think it matters, need is need, whether utilized or not. In any case, let them want it, what is the big deal?
-
@fabsh Adobe know most of their users are illegal installs, when peeps say they want PS, they mean they want a working illegal install of PS
-
@jancborchardt I have seen the link before, but never actually gone there. Glad to see a lot of projects I have contributed to, and new ones
-
@jonobacon The big deal is that with all the money wasted on Adobe's crap, we could code our own in a snap and make it proper F/OSS.
-
@jonobacon if you don't care about software freedom, it would be. But why not just buy a mac then?
-
@jancborchardt Now, all one needs is one's own cloud! Oh, wait...
-
@jonobacon Somebody recently calculated that the license fees from the people clamoring on OMG would give us $13+ million to work with.
-
@thistleweb I didn't even open that can of worms. 95% of people on that OMG thread wouldn't even have the money to pay for CS, I bet.
-
@fabsh the peeps who will pay are pro offices, who mandate windows for general purpose + design or osx for the designers
-
@gvs software freedom comes in many forms. e.g. I believe in FLOSS, but I still use Skype. We all draw our lines in different ways.
-
@fabsh wanna start a humbleFOSSbundle.com to encourage donations to those projects needing feature parity?
-
@jancborchardt How about Dudle, a FaiF Doodle replacement? For time tracking I also recommend the German 'Kimai'. Did the Danish translation
-
@johndrinkwater Man, I totally would if I could shoulder another project ATM.... :/
-
@silner For everything I've done in the last three years, I didn't miss CS. We have awesome tools, let's promote them and stop the FUD!
-
@fabsh I wouldn't use it, but I say a stand alone Linux version might grab some users who feel they can't make the leap
-
@jonobacon drawing lines in different ways means creating different picture, can we assume your picture has the metal devil horns? ;P
-
@jonobacon are you part of that 'some'? Yes or no? Do you subscribe the view that proprietary software that is popular should be ported? Y/N
-
@mmuman True, but since there are many Flash sites ATM, and we can't force change, we need free sw workarounds, at least in the short term.
-
@sazius Repeat after me: "yes we can" :p For public-owned sites, many countries now have guidelines about accessibility (RGAA in France)
-
@jancborchardt vodo.net + libreprojects.net sound great! Thanks to @jonobacon for bitching about @fabsh bitching so I found this convo. ;-)
-
@sazius Awesome tip, thanks! Been using a greasemonkey script that uses the gnash-compatible embedded version of the player.
-
@fabsh Actually, I do all of my editing on Linux. :)
-
@thisweekinlinux Really? What do you use? It looks excellent! :D And cool that you listen to !LO. :D
-
@fabsh I use Kdenlive to edit my videos. Made a series of video tutorials on using it a while back, and presented on it at Ohio LinuxFest :)
-
@thisweekinlinux Never even got that program to even *start* properly.... Oo
-
@fabsh did you try running kdenlive on your Arch machine?
-
@jezra Nope. My laptop isn't really powerful enough for video editing.....
-
@fabsh do not tell me a computer isn't powerful enough unless it has less than 1Ghz of process and/or RAM. Old computers need love too!
speeddefrost likes this. -
@jezra Have you ever edited 2 hrs of 720p video?
-
@jezra :D
-
@fabsh it is the worst shit I've ever seen. In the scene, Subotai loses his accent. pffttttt hitting the birthday scotch, recording audio
-
@jezra Hahahaha...... :D
