The next-generation !browser may have no URL bar - http://gadaf.fi/2cy - !chrome !chromium !firefox !webdevelopment !ux !hci !usability
- Alex Kuster and Dimitri Dhuyvetter repeated this.
-
@jabz that sounds like a awful stupid idea for me #no.url.bar
-
@bavatar: I am ambivalent. When I first heard it, it sounded terrible. :)
-
@clacke You are absolutely right. "Essential for hackers, confusing for most" pins it down.
-
@jabz It's difficult to get out of the trap of projecting your own needs on an interface designed for another target audience.
-
@jabz *shudder*
-
@clacke An interface needs to be designed for ALL users
-
@marjoleink That simply isn't possible if you want to create succinct interfaces. Interface design is a form of writing. Know your audience.

@clacke perfectly possible! If you cannot imagine how to do that, you are not a good UI designer. UIs need to be discoverable and adaptable.
-
@marjoleink ah, c'mon. It's not that bad, isn't it? I have some strong points pro ASCII.
-
@jabz ASCII is good for people who use western languages, mostly English. You cannot type a Chinese URL because it wasn't designed for YOU
-
@marjoleink: acknowledged. I will re-think that point. Will work on the article later.
-
@marjoleink They do, and that will make them usable for more user types. But there usually comes a point where you need to make a choice.
-
@jabz I'd never use (on my PC, at least) a !browser which is not able to *constantly* display the #URL I'm at. Point. #URL_bar #poor_design
-
@clacke hey! nice bit of user advocacy there. Hope to see more design in FLOSS world, not in graphic design sense, nor in "dumbing down"
