@kevingranade, while lack of docs & my #xmodmap problem are both bugs, a dev was responsive to me *on identica* w/in 24 hours. Fast service!

I suddenly had urge to upgrade to !Debian squeeze. I've been hanging around lenny for too long. Ok,I'm going for it. Watch everything break!
-
@bkuhn Nothing broke for me; only upgrade that ever worked properly for me actually
-
@bkuhn LOL! :D
-
@bkuhn best wishes for smooth upgrade! Same thought's been on my mind too... will keep an eye out for any pains you share, thkx in advance.
-
@bkuhn I try not to use cpan often there are rpms / dpkgs for perl modules.
-
@techspotting,sorry if I wasn't clear. In cases where !Perl module is not in !Debian, I use dh-make-perl to create dpkg. That's what I meant
-
@bkuhn I use local::lib, which is an excellent way of getting all the goodness of CPAN while not interfering with the system packages
-
@bkuhn also the benefit of not needing to use root for installation, and it won't break across versions
-
I wish someone had told me xmodmap was deprecated in !Debian. My entire computer usage depends on being able to mod my keyboard. I'm fucked.
-
@bkuhn I think this was one reason why I couldn't set up a compose key.
-
A blog post about my ordeal when #xorg failed to accept my existing #xmodmap upon upgrading from !Debian lenny->squeeze: http://ur1.ca/4b87f

@bkuhn what if you remove the "add" lines from .xmodmap? Will the error go away? I worked around a similar issue using keycode & Mode_switch
-
@bkuhn that was an x server bug that should now be fixed as of 1.9/1.10. sorry about that, and sorry about xkb too!
-
@bkuhn xkb is a lot more expressive than xmodmap but the latter should always remain working, and we do need better tools for xkb.
-
@bkuhn #xmodmap is broken and IMHO should no longer be used. #xkb seems more flexible once one knows how to use it.

@vinc17 if xmodmap doesn't work, that's a bug which must be fixed -> http://bugs.freedesktop.org.
-
@fooishbar The bug has been open for almost 4 years: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11822
-
@vinc17 ouch - unfortunately it was on the wrong (misleadingly-named) component so i didn't pick it up on my searches through bz. thanks.
-
@ao2, sure, removing the "add" lines makes the error go away, but it doesn't yield my Meta as Mod1 & Alt as Mod2, defeating the point.
-
@bkuhn then we at least now where the problem is. strange.
-
@bkuhn what I meant was that maybe you can find an alternative way to set modifiers starting from keycodes. The bug still holds OFC.
-
@bkuhn Actually that's the xmodmap / kbd driver combination that is broken: http://bugs.debian.org/432011
-
@bkuhn I don't know about your case. I switched to xkb a few weeks ago and started to write http://www.vinc17.net/unix/xkb.html
-
@vinc17, madduck's tutorial is pretty good too;you may want to cross-link to it. Meanwhile, you know what mailing list to ask xkb questions?
-
@gabrielsaldana,My Alt_L is meta on !thinkpad keyboard. On HHKB, I have a seprate Meta key. I use Alt to control #sawfish, Meta for !Emacs
-
@silner I'd be inclined to think "F15 because you're worth it" - always good to flex the migration muscles every now and then ;-)
-
@bkuhn I'll give refs. I used http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-french/2004/02/msg01539.html (in French). I don't know specific lists.
-
@bkuhn Upstream bug https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11822 (corresponding to my Debian bug) is still open.
-
@bkuhn You may need to unset things. You can dump the complete config with "xkbcomp $DISPLAY xkb.dump" and see if there's anything wrong.
-
@vinc17, yeah I've done plenty of that. I'm pretty sure I've discovered some sort of bug. I have a work around for myself, but want to ask.
-
@bkuhn Make sure all modifiers are of type ONE_LEVEL, or something like that. Otherwise strange things can happen.

@bkuhn Ohhh ok cool :)
-
@bkuhn yep, what you describe is definitely a bug and i'm fairly sure i fixed it upstream a couple of releases back. will have to recheck!
-
@bkuhn as for debian/upstream - they don't patch that kind of stuff, so it'd definitely be an upstream problem.
-
@bkuhn xkb questions are handled at xkb@listserv.bat.ru or xorg-devel@lists.x.org - myself and sergey udaltsov will see it
-
@trashbird1240 it's not a debian-specific problem, it's just that fedora is a little more up-to-date. anyone using that version is screwed.
-
I've attempted to be a good !FaiF sw community citizen by adding my #xmodmap problems to relevant !Debian bugs: ur1.ca/4bbry & ur1.ca/4bbrz
-
@fooishbar, ok, I'll post the #xkb thing I was trying to xkb@listserv.bat.ru to confirm that I'm not just doing it wrong. Will do this wknd.
-
b/c of my #xmodmap complaint,I forgot to mention how nice #Inconsolata 1.01 looks in !Debian squeeze. My favorite !Emacs font's even better!
-
@bkuhn I use that as a terminal font. :)
yosch likes this. -
@fabsh, yeah, I use #Inconsolata for #xterm as well. Between that & !Emacs, about 80% of what I read on a computer is in that font.
yosch likes this. -
@bkuhn yeah, #inconsolata is the best font ever \o/
-
@bkuhn Isn't there Emacs-terminalmode or something? :P
-
@fabsh, there are various !Emacs terminal modes. I used to ansi-term sometimes. Interaction of Emacs w/ CLI editing in #Bash is !problematic
-
@bkuhn Have you tried #AnonymousPro? I rather like it; very nice #OFL'd #monospace font. http://ur1.ca/3ntlp
-
@sazius,I spent a lot of time getting #Inconsolata to look "right". Ping me again in a few weeks to remind me to write a blog post about it
-
@bkuhn chuckle, no problem :)
-
@fabsh Meta-x eshell
-
@sleepynate emacs -nsfw. only use vi for that
-
@bkuhn No!! Can't be!!! Emacs problematic? Nooooo!!! ;)
-
@fabsh,Please pay attention to the precision of my wording: the !problematic part is *interaction* btw !Emacs & #Bash. Also, stop #troll'ing
-
@bkuhn Now you're blaming Bash???? This means war! :P
-
@sazius Looks good in Xfce on Arch.
-
@bkuhn terminus is also a great font for consoles :)
-
@sazius It's not the font. Debian probably doesn't do hinting or something because of some freedom reason or other....
-
@carlosmn I think that expired last year. And I think Apple was the patent holder, although I'm not sure....
-
@fabsh I think Apple own a different one (they use best-form-fit instead of best-pixel-fit or some such), though who doesn't these days
-
@carlosmn Glad that Arch gives a fuck about patents because I don't either.
-
@sazius How would the font be at fault? It's probably just that you don't notice it with other fonts.
-
@sazius Hinting isn't font based. The font itself is exactly the same as in every other distro.
-
@fabsh hear hear! specially since software patents aren't actually valid in this part of the world (but I don't want to leave Debian)
-
@carlosmn Debian is too conservative for me for the desktop.
-
@sazius Glad I could help. A bit.... :)
-
@fabsh fair enough, I usually have GNOME sources lying around anyway, so if I want anything newer I use jhbuild
-
@sazius glad you got sorted :)
-
@carlosmn I need a lot of other new stuff....
-
@fabsh yeah, I guess you need more modern stuff when you do podcasting, I tend to use emacs and the shell most of the time
-
@sazius Cool! :)
-
@bkuhn hilariously, i think it might not be a bug at all - have sent an email to bkuhn@ebb.org.
Bradley M. Kuhn likes this. -
@fooishbar, cool, thanks! I'll watch for your email. I think it's currently sitting in greylisting so I haven't seen it yet.
-
@bkuhn M-x term works for me, but I need to leave it to get back to real emacs with keyboard shortcuts…
-
@bkuhn sadly that’s OFL licensed, so it can’t be sold in itself. Is that completely copyright safe? → I want GPL with font exception…
-
Man, the 1's in the new #Inconsolata look pretty freaking good. I can't get over it, maybe because it's really obvious in "2011".
