      @lstench Did you get the chance to read my review of SimplyMepis 11? http://bit.ly/kW2BHk

      @kevie so you don't think a newbie could handle setting mepis up by themselves? I think synaptic is simple.

      @lstench @kevie In my experience, Mepis, Mint, PCLOS are *the* distros for total newbies. Others need some guidance first.

      @lstench my folks just got confused with synaptic, I use them as guinea pigs ;)

      @kevie: @lstench I have loved #Synaptic for years, but it's on the verge of being replaced in #Ubuntu and #PCLOS!

      @lstench @sebsebseb technically it's sound, but the UI and layout don't make it easy for a newbie who's only experience is a phone app store

      @lstench @kevie #Synaptic Package Manager is really rather Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS).

      @lnxwalt280 @lstench @kevie A newbie should get on rather well with #Mandriva and the noob friendly #Mageia will be released on June 1st :)!

      @kevie @lstench Well the #Ubuntu Software Centre is worth a try!

      @kevie as in android market or iphone app store? Can the software center be installed on Mepis?

      Monday, 30-May-11 19:55:52 UTC
    • mrs. stench mrs. stench Sebastian

      @sebsebseb I don't see Mandriva as a total newbie distro esp. when it come to installing apps.

      Monday, 30-May-11 20:03:58 UTC
    • bigbrovar bigbrovar

      @lstench I think the software center is over rated, I preferred the old add & remove tool. Software center is slow and clunky IMHO

      @lemonzest: Hello

      Monday, 30-May-11 22:00:08 UTC
    • Sebastian Sebastian

      @lstench: #Mandriva 's and #Mageia 's graphical applications installer program is ok, but I find #Synaptic Package Manager much better!

      Monday, 30-May-11 22:04:16 UTC
    • Sebastian Sebastian Kev Macphail

      @kevie: I guess it's possible to have it with that #Linux #distro, but not really meant to be used with it! I think #Debian have a version!

      Monday, 30-May-11 22:13:36 UTC
    • Kev Macphail Kev Macphail

      @lstench either, most newbies from m$ have only used that type of software on a smartphone

      Monday, 30-May-11 22:23:57 UTC

      @lstench @kevie http://lgallardo.com/en/2010/08/17/ubuntu-software-center-en-debian/ #Debian #Ubuntu

      @sebsebseb thanks, I may try that on in-laws SimplyMepis install :)

      Monday, 30-May-11 22:46:14 UTC
    • Sebastian Sebastian bigbrovar

      @bigbrovar Same here, I prefer the old add/remove, I have never liked #Ubuntu Software Centre much!

      Monday, 30-May-11 22:48:15 UTC
    • Kev Macphail Kev Macphail bigbrovar , Sebastian

      @bigbrovar @sebsebseb I don't like it personally,prefer to use the command line,but the non geeks like it & keeping them happy is important

      Monday, 30-May-11 22:53:20 UTC
    • Sebastian Sebastian Kev Macphail

      @kevie: You're welcome :)!

      Tuesday, 31-May-11 00:09:29 UTC
    • Sebastian Sebastian Kev Macphail

      @kevie: The #Ubuntu Software Centre is aimed at non geeks! You use #Gentoo so I would expect you to much prefer using the command line!

      Tuesday, 31-May-11 00:13:12 UTC
    • bigbrovar bigbrovar Kev Macphail

      @kevie true, but even for.non geeks the experience could be better, bunch installation could.be improved. For example

      @kevie I get you now thats a good point.
