@glynmoody, IMO #Github's not a triumph like !Linux or !Git itself. Github's a proprietary hosting service. @gitorious is !FaiF alternative

    • Gabriel Saldana Gabriel Saldana Bradley M. Kuhn

@glynmoody I agree, with @bkuhn also I think #github's success is more of usability than of the vcs

@bkuhn Better yet: http://repo.or.cz is fully !free, including full server source code !git

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Free Software & Culture Group , Gitorious.org , V.Villenave

@vvillenave, yes, but I believe that the @gitorious server source code is also !FaiF, just like http://repo.or.cz 's is. Am I wrong on that?

      @bkuhn You are correct: https://gitorious.org/gitorious AGPLv3

    • Gitorious.org Gitorious.org Bradley M. Kuhn , V.Villenave

@bkuhn @vvillenave Gitorious is licensed under the AGPL. Code here https://gitorious.org/gitorious/mainline

    • V.Villenave V.Villenave Bradley M. Kuhn , Gitorious.org

@gitorious @bkuhn Indeed. The main difference is that you guys are a software company, whereas repo.or.cz is purely volunteer-driven.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Gitorious.org

@gitorious, yeah, I thought so, that's why I promote your service. But, I figured it was theoretically possible that you'd stopped. :)

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Gitorious.org , V.Villenave

@vvillenave, volunteer vs. corporate is indeed an important factor, so I'll start using repo.or.cz too. But I do like @gitorious' interface…

@bkuhn: yes, but github wouldn't have succeeded without the underlying code driving it, presumably

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn The GNU General Public License , disturbing

@glynmoody, I agree but that makes it all the more !disturbing. #Github is an example of how !GPL is the BSD license of the web application.

@bkuhn Isn't that the whole reason the !fsf wrote the Affero !gpl ?

    • ashcrow ashcrow Bradley M. Kuhn

@bkuhn YES! People skirt around the spirit of the GPL on the web. Long live #AGPL!

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn GNU Affero General Public Licence , The GNU General Public License , Jonathan Beatty

@jbeatty, correct. I invented the #Affero clause to handle this problem. The tragedy for me is that !AGPL is a separate license from !GPL.

@fontana do you know (of) an attorney called Paul Arne? he's to speak Mon at auug.org mtg on #agpl, other topics. I'll be there. CC @bkuhn

@jeffg,I don't know #Arne, but you have my permission to name drop me at talk☺ @kaz may want to to be in touch w/him on medical device issue

@fontana,IMO Wikipedia entry at http://ur1.ca/4byk1 accurately describes !AGPL's creation. @poole was catalyst; idea for 2(d) quine was mine

@bkuhn count on it. I hope to come out of the meeting with my first solo #gplv2 -> #gplv3 convert as well. see you at #selinuxfest again?

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Jeff Gehlbach

@jeffg, I won't be at #selinuxfest. I can't make it to all of them. I hope to come in a future year. I'll be at some other fests this year.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn The GNU General Public License , Jeff Gehlbach

@jeffg, the easiest way to to convert lawyers to !GPLv3 is point out how much friendlier the termination provision is. Doesn't always work.

    • Jeff Gehlbach Jeff Gehlbach Bradley M. Kuhn

@bkuhn actually, I hope to convert a friend who maintains a project and who chose gplv2 at outset owing partly to my input.

    • Jeff Gehlbach Jeff Gehlbach Bradley M. Kuhn

@bkuhn you could if you joined the Q Continuum. you probably could eliminate proprietary sw then, too. you should work on scoring an invite.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Jeff Gehlbach

@jeffg, I'm still somewhat confused at the limits of power of the Q Continuum. It's made clear in the series that "Our Q" exaggerated it.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Jeff Gehlbach

@jeffg , I must admit that I somewhat agree with Q that humanity ought to be put on trial for being a "vicious, savage child-race". #STTNG

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn The GNU General Public License , Richard Fontana

@fontana,that'd make lawyers like most sw companies: Most don't take any of !GPL seriously. Most people say enforcement is losing battle too

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn OSCON , Richard Fontana

@fontana, We'll see each other at !OSCON right? You're speaking, right? and we're sharing a hotel room? we can talk #AGPLv4 then.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Richard Fontana

@fontana, that point, while I believe it is true, seems like a non-sequitur for the dent you are responding to. Can you explain further?

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn disturbing , O'Reilly Open Source Convention , Richard Fontana

@fontana, Has @oscon still ignored your requests for details about your talk? It's less than 2 months away. This is very !disturbing.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn The GNU General Public License , Richard Fontana , Harald Welte

@fontana,interesting,I never knew that. @laforge believes !GPLv2 already works that way (he& I disagree on that),but I like way !GPLv3 works
