#spam is a waste of time and energy. Everyone's, including the #spammers'

@papabean Good call! Hmm, how do we do that? 1). Stop paying people who may depend on their activities as spammers to make rent?

@papabean It seems to me a bit like telling the sweat-shop worker they can't work there anymore.

@papabean Good ideas all. I clicked on that link because I thought it looked interesting. I do ALL the rest of the stuff you say

    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean but you'll have to explain the monkey thing!

    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

      @papabean Right, so who does?

    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean So let's take that analogy to the spam question. What's being "sold" mostly?

      @papabean That's a great answer!

@papabean what do you think about anti-spam legislation?

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 18:35:31 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean Yep, I work in social and marcom research and can attest that they do try to sell lists to companies in that field.

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 18:37:16 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean actually a lot of companies do that. #Facebook is one that comes to mind

    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean ok, so if I've understood, it's only up to the people who use the web to change their behaviour?

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 18:39:50 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean Was it clear to you that your information was being used to generate targeted ads and that it was being sold to third parties?

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 18:43:13 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean Do you think most people know AND do they care?

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 18:44:37 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean Why don't they care? I guess it's my own professional deformation, but I like to know what information I`m mediating about myself

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 18:48:20 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean You've got me wondering whether #Facebook users actually do know what's being done with their information...

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 19:03:57 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean Oh, I'd heard about that one. The example of the photo of the guy with the aviator glasses getting shown an ad for them, right?

@papabean Ever feel you're missing out on something by not being on FB? I`m not on it and I know I miss messages for stuff.

    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell Apache Wave

@papabean Do you think !Wave is going to do things any better? What other options do people have?

      Monday, 03-Aug-09 19:17:36 UTC
    • Kate Caldwell Kate Caldwell

@papabean Haven't tried Orkut. Prefer lunch on the terrasse and telephones. I like #OMB and know I`m missing stuff by not being ubiqitous.

@papabean Thanks for letting me know! Who knows, maybe they're waiting to start #crowdsourcing on that one;-)

@papabean just sent you a link about the very issue we discussed the other day. Canada is a bit different.

@papabean I understand Canadian PIPEDA has a stricter definition of personal info and opt-in rather than opt-out requirements for collection
