      @loug Abiword springs to mind (gnumeric for the spreadsheet functions)

      @loug What @kevie said; it is *much* lighter than LO and meets most people's needs. (Not enterprizy, though.) Not tried, but KOffice.

      @markusgolser @oslugr @vanden @kevie Just need something for novel writing & can easily either be saved to google docs or converted to .doc

      @vanden does KOffice even exist? When I searched for it on Wikipedia it came up with Calligra Suite instead.

      @loug ABiWord too, enough in 90% of the cases.

      @loug I believe Calligra is a fork/renaming of the KOffice project.

      @loug: Some people use LOffice, but Abiword or just plain Emacs could also be a solution

      @loug: It's basically a LaTeX front-end

      @oslugr I know of LOffice, and Abiword, never heard of Emacs or LaTex

      @loug why not koffice? I think it makes perfect sense under kde!

      @loug: LaTeX is a scientific typesetting system, and emacs just an editor (which might be all you need for writing the novel)

      @loug #abiword does a nice job and it's fast. BTW: your favorite #editor with !latex or !asciidoc is a nice choice too !linux

      @w4rr10r Well, to be honest, I wouldn't recomment !Calligra Words just yet... Wait a couple of months and it may be different.

      @loug kubuntu ships with libreoffice, there is also koffice which many regard not as good as libreoffice you can always try it out though

      @w4rr10r The problem is that !Calligra words is not yet released. There are snapshots but the UI is in fast improvement mode.

      @w4rr10r There is Softmaker Office 2008 which is a great suite for Linux and also Symphony. Both are proprietary, but free.

      @loug and what is wrong with liberoffice in these aspects? exportting to doc is working nicely

      @w4rr10r True. For simple documents !KOffice is not bad.

      @loug Calligra Words (part of Calligra Suite, not yet released but very good)

      @jankusanagi about that - how much is there difference between koffice and calligra? I am having a hard time grasping that relationship.

    • JanKusanagi JanKusanagi Michał Andrzej Woźniak

      @rysiek from my experience,current C-Words has improved a lot from Koffice's KWord 2.3. Kword 2.4 has probably improved too, haven't tested

      @loug May I ask why Libreoffice doesn't meet these (seemingly simple) requirements?

      @skreech2 @loug @markusgolser @oslugr @vanden @kevie Indeed, as I know both OO.o and LibreOffice are used by writers daily.

    • Brian van den Broek Brian van den Broek Johnny Null

      @johnnynull Sure, but many people do find the lighter, less featurefull Abiword both easier and adequate. I myself have long used #LaTex.

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null Brian van den Broek

      @vanden I've heard a couple complaints about Abiword, but I find it fine for simple stuff. I used LyX until I was told things would (1/2)

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null Brian van den Broek

      @vanden have to be reformatted to be published, and LyX isn't up to snuff for commerical stuff. (2/2)

      about 11 months ago
    • Michał Andrzej Woźniak Michał Andrzej Woźniak Roger Pixley

      @skreech2 but is calligra a fork? or a name change of KOffice?

      about 11 months ago
    • Roger Pixley Roger Pixley Michał Andrzej Woźniak

      @rysiek Highly depends on who you speak to but it's a sister codebase to be diplomatic.
