Every multi-DE !linux distro has to deal with DE neutral issue, !fedora is not a exception: http://is.gd/rUX2DM

@lovenemesis That was fast--I thought it would take until Fedora 17 before somebody proposed KDE as the default! http://is.gd/rUX2DM
-
@belltelusrogers Maybe you would also be interesting to know that this proposal was rejected yesterday.
-
@lovenemesis Not ideal for me as a !KDE user, but good choice for !Fedora. Bad to abandon !GNOME 3 just because initial reviews were bad.
-
@belltelusrogers I would call the initial reviews more than bad. They are scathing in their hatred for the direction Gnome has taken. :)
-
@belltelusrogers I constantly use !fedora !KDE spin, which IMO is a high standard #KDE distro. Don't get the point for "By Default".
-
@lovenemesis *phew*, by default is not my ideal choice. We are not #openSUSE. I do not see the big issue with Gnome3
-
@belltelusrogers No one ditched !KDE for the immature 4.0 release, so I don't think should do this for !GNOME.
-
@gbraad For me I don't see the point to argue for "Default", as long as all the major DE spins are release simultaneously.
-
@lovenemesis if you put a primary download on the frontpage you specify a default and putting a new user for the choice is also bad idea
-
@lovenemesis choice itself is not bad, but letting him choose between available options might be when he is new.
-
@gbraad But hey, he should be informed the exist of other options, which looks good ATM because of "More Options" below "Download".
-
@lovenemesis I thought you would say so... might be for the power user, but for them you do not offer a default and they can find other DE's
-
@lovenemesis if #Fedora wants to target regular users, it is like offering #Ubuntu (or even like Mac) they choose for them or no alternative
-
@lovenemesis yes... so this different from your conclusion http://is.gd/uP9DaQ a default should be offered, WITH simultaneous releases?
-
@seablue I try to ignore reviews b/c they cloud whether I like some new thing. There are other GNOME 2-like DEs, so new path in 3 is good
-
@lovenemesis 'first time users' should be asked this question and compared with DE project vision and roadmap. what else can you base it on?
-
@lovenemesis at the moment it is what 'scratches our itch', but is that the best way? let new users tell what worked best for them.
-
@christianabryant that would bring back a lot of good memories... *sighs*, wow... all of a sudden I feel old.
-
@christianabryant @lovenemesis doing real world Usability tests for F/OSS? what about Canonical, Redhat and Novell, they could support this.
Marjolein Katsma likes this. -
@christianabryant @lovenemesis isn't this the 'User' part of FUDCon ? Ideally we should have User Activity days/tests ;-)
-
@lovenemesis LOL. very... ahum... visual approach by using #WoW as an example. yes, but does this work for a DE? how about standard offering
-
@lovenemesis supporting multiple DE's stresses your QA process more. you would need a standard set of usable tools that 'make' your distro
-
@lovenemesis I am not stating any preference myself. I just think QA is also a matter for choice
-
@gbraad Definitely QA should be considered as a matter for choice, for we do have quite limit number of dedicate testers.
-
@lovenemesis besides #QA we should also improve UX testing. but this is probably a too far fetched idea to work on? :-s
-
@lovenemesis installfests exists, but what about catchup? what did the user experience? for now, I think #GNOME provides a good start
-
@lovenemesis I believe Redhat made a choice to use #GNOME2 on their enterprise desktop. we have GNOME3 now, so what about UX testing?
-
@lovenemesis we need to allow interested people to show up and join us for this. I would like some #QA input from He Rui and James Laska
-
@gbraad Just A Reminder: How much do you know about OSW? I haven't heard about the group behind it before.
-
@lovenemesis me neither and was planning to get in touch. time hasn't allowed me yet.
-
@gbraad I like the QA part. We could easily get in touch with Rui He, right?
-
@lovenemesis she works in the same office as Grace. Wanted to talk to her last time, but time did not allow me
