Every multi-DE !linux distro has to deal with DE neutral issue, !fedora is not a exception: http://is.gd/rUX2DM

Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 01:20:06 UTC from web
    • Christopher Antila Christopher Antila

@lovenemesis That was fast--I thought it would take until Fedora 17 before somebody proposed KDE as the default! http://is.gd/rUX2DM

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 02:09:46 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Christopher Antila

@belltelusrogers Maybe you would also be interesting to know that this proposal was rejected yesterday.

@lovenemesis Not ideal for me as a !KDE user, but good choice for !Fedora. Bad to abandon !GNOME 3 just because initial reviews were bad.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 02:29:51 UTC
    • Mustard Lee Mustard Lee Christopher Antila

@belltelusrogers I would call the initial reviews more than bad. They are scathing in their hatred for the direction Gnome has taken. :)

    • Tommy He Tommy He Fedora users , Christopher Antila

@belltelusrogers I constantly use !fedora !KDE spin, which IMO is a high standard #KDE distro. Don't get the point for "By Default".

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 02:42:38 UTC

@lovenemesis *phew*, by default is not my ideal choice. We are not #openSUSE. I do not see the big issue with Gnome3

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 02:50:02 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He GNOME , Christopher Antila

@belltelusrogers No one ditched !KDE for the immature 4.0 release, so I don't think should do this for !GNOME.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 02:58:45 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Gerard Braad —

@gbraad For me I don't see the point to argue for "Default", as long as all the major DE spins are release simultaneously.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 03:11:00 UTC

@lovenemesis if you put a primary download on the frontpage you specify a default and putting a new user for the choice is also bad idea

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 03:21:26 UTC

@lovenemesis choice itself is not bad, but letting him choose between available options might be when he is new.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 03:22:15 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Gerard Braad —

@gbraad But hey, he should be informed the exist of other options, which looks good ATM because of "More Options" below "Download".

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 03:43:21 UTC

@lovenemesis I thought you would say so... might be for the power user, but for them you do not offer a default and they can find other DE's

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 03:47:46 UTC

@lovenemesis if #Fedora wants to target regular users, it is like offering #Ubuntu (or even like Mac) they choose for them or no alternative

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 03:48:57 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Fedora users , GNOME , Gerard Braad —

@gbraad Hmm, so that comes to !Fedora should choose !GNOME or !KDE for regular users, right?

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 03:58:12 UTC

@lovenemesis yes... so this different from your conclusion http://is.gd/uP9DaQ a default should be offered, WITH simultaneous releases?

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 04:02:16 UTC
    • Christopher Antila Christopher Antila Mustard Lee

@seablue I try to ignore reviews b/c they cloud whether I like some new thing. There are other GNOME 2-like DEs, so new path in 3 is good

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 04:09:37 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He GNOME , Gerard Braad —

@gbraad Then I prefer !GNOME for "Default", since we'd better differentiate from #openSUSE.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 04:11:22 UTC

@lovenemesis 'first time users' should be asked this question and compared with DE project vision and roadmap. what else can you base it on?

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 04:45:52 UTC

@lovenemesis at the moment it is what 'scratches our itch', but is that the best way? let new users tell what worked best for them.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 04:47:23 UTC

@christianabryant that would bring back a lot of good memories... *sighs*, wow... all of a sudden I feel old.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 04:55:59 UTC

@christianabryant @lovenemesis doing real world Usability tests for F/OSS? what about Canonical, Redhat and Novell, they could support this.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 04:58:39 UTC
      Marjolein Katsma likes this.

@christianabryant @lovenemesis isn't this the 'User' part of FUDCon ? Ideally we should have User Activity days/tests ;-)

@gbraad Think how a new gamer in #WoW picks up a race for his character. We can use the similar approach: Present the Highlights for each DE

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:08:29 UTC

@lovenemesis LOL. very... ahum... visual approach by using #WoW as an example. yes, but does this work for a DE? how about standard offering

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:14:55 UTC

@lovenemesis supporting multiple DE's stresses your QA process more. you would need a standard set of usable tools that 'make' your distro

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:15:40 UTC

@lovenemesis I am not stating any preference myself. I just think QA is also a matter for choice

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:17:53 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He

@gbraad #NightElf can be a Droid but #Orc cannot, "standard" offering. :) !GNOME has Webcam #Cheese while !KDE doesn't, present it clear.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:22:23 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Gerard Braad —

@gbraad Definitely QA should be considered as a matter for choice, for we do have quite limit number of dedicate testers.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:23:34 UTC

@lovenemesis besides #QA we should also improve UX testing. but this is probably a too far fetched idea to work on? :-s

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:52:57 UTC

@lovenemesis installfests exists, but what about catchup? what did the user experience? for now, I think #GNOME provides a good start

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:56:28 UTC

@lovenemesis I believe Redhat made a choice to use #GNOME2 on their enterprise desktop. we have GNOME3 now, so what about UX testing?

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 05:59:17 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Gerard Braad —

@gbraad Hey, maybe we can start organizing a UX Testing on FAD #Beijing 2011. That would be a lot fun.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 06:36:42 UTC

@lovenemesis we need to allow interested people to show up and join us for this. I would like some #QA input from He Rui and James Laska

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 06:47:12 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Gerard Braad —

@gbraad Just A Reminder: How much do you know about OSW? I haven't heard about the group behind it before.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 06:49:36 UTC

@lovenemesis me neither and was planning to get in touch. time hasn't allowed me yet.

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 06:57:46 UTC
    • Tommy He Tommy He Gerard Braad —

@gbraad I like the QA part. We could easily get in touch with Rui He, right?

      Tuesday, 12-Jul-11 07:18:17 UTC

@lovenemesis she works in the same office as Grace. Wanted to talk to her last time, but time did not allow me
