This is, as well, a lot of the reason my friends prefer Windows on their netbooks. A cut of several hours battery life is ridiculous

@richslxh And I've got a 17inch MacBook Pro that runs for 6 hours on a charge. Can we ever say linux ain't so great at something, & improve?

@joshix @richslxh my experience over last 3 laptops is ~20% better bat life w/ windows. My current one is the same for win7 and linux.

@mcnalu I do, btw, understand ways the comparison isn't fair, i.e., access to black art of manufacturer acpi tables. But still.

@joshix yes. Comparison will be fair if I can go to a shop and buy a laptop w/ linux pre-installed by manufacturer. I can't at present.

@richslxh yes, on one. Tried different video drivers, hdparm etc but to no avail. I work almost exclusively on linux, rarely on windows.

@richslxh IMHO there's no techical reason why linux can't be tuned to the same performance - it'd take more openness from manufacturers.

@richslxh true, apple website exaggerates on mac book pro battery life. Several apple using colleagues of mine admit that.

@richslxh Mac hardware is commodity PC hardware when you argue the cost one direction, special Mac hardware in the other.

@richslxh The macbook runs apache/php/mysql, a file server, an itunes share, a ssh server. The linux runs... nothing. It's a mgmt problem.

@richslxh Further, the mac runs at 2.6Ghz full-time, the linux has amd scaling & sits at 800Mhz 99% of the time.

@richslxh The iphone will get through a workday. If I had it full-on full-time, I dunno, 4 hours maybe. It's an old 3G.
