@richslxh This is kinda like talking to @fabsh. "I just don't believe physics. It's biased." What would like me to give you?

This is, as well, a lot of the reason my friends prefer Windows on their netbooks. A cut of several hours battery life is ridiculous

@richslxh I played with all this stuff when I was using Fedora and got it up to about two hours light use, still a 1.5 hour drop from Win

@richslxh Sorry, but that's not it.

    • joshix joshix

      @jonkulp It's actually sysv-rc-conf.

    • joshix joshix

@jonkulp Anyway it's a perl utility that switches services on and off across runlevels.

@richslxh And I've got a 17inch MacBook Pro that runs for 6 hours on a charge. Can we ever say linux ain't so great at something, & improve?

@joshix mine is only 9", but I can keep it going for 7 hours :-)

@richslxh Yes it is totally my fault. I should stay at home more. Curse me and my adventurous life.

@richslxh Anyway it's not a behavioral question. Same hardware can do ~6 hours. Linux can do 1.5. It's not services. Also what @jargon said.

@joshix @richslxh my experience over last 3 laptops is ~20% better bat life w/ windows. My current one is the same for win7 and linux.

@mcnalu I do, btw, understand ways the comparison isn't fair, i.e., access to black art of manufacturer acpi tables. But still.

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@joshix yes. Comparison will be fair if I can go to a shop and buy a laptop w/ linux pre-installed by manufacturer. I can't at present.

      @jargon You have a 3 cell? Dude!

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@richslxh yes, on one. Tried different video drivers, hdparm etc but to no avail. I work almost exclusively on linux, rarely on windows.

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@richslxh IMHO there's no techical reason why linux can't be tuned to the same performance - it'd take more openness from manufacturers.

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@richslxh that's exactly what I chose to do and on my current laptop I get same battery life in linux and superior performance over win7

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@richslxh true, apple website exaggerates on mac book pro battery life. Several apple using colleagues of mine admit that.

    • joshix joshix

@richslxh Mac hardware is commodity PC hardware when you argue the cost one direction, special Mac hardware in the other.

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@richslxh could be true, but I hardly use it so not tried. I'd also have the bloatware free and trial stuff to rake out.

    • joshix joshix

@richslxh The macbook runs apache/php/mysql, a file server, an itunes share, a ssh server. The linux runs... nothing. It's a mgmt problem.

    • joshix joshix

@richslxh Further, the mac runs at 2.6Ghz full-time, the linux has amd scaling & sits at 800Mhz 99% of the time.

    • joshix joshix

@richslxh So anyway, don't believe all you want. It's not my lost time being corded to the wall.

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@joshix i've no doubt that macs give the best performance & features out the box right now, but it is a pricey box. I can get close to >

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@joshix > to that by spend several hours tweaking up linux on carefully chosen hardware. Apple and OSX aren't my cup of tea though.

@mcnalu Nor, to preempt the usual dichotomy of software discussion, am I necessarily their greatest proponent. I'm just spading a spade.

    • mcnalu mcnalu

@joshix sure. I am not arguing a point here. Just stating my POV, experience and preference.

    • joshix joshix

@richslxh Which is fine, but, again, not the point. You could get around no computer at all with behavior changes. Use paper. Lasts all day.

    • joshix joshix

@richslxh NOT THE POINT! I just want linux to do this for me. Dammit, macs are expensive. I'm tired of buying them. Don't you see!?

    • joshix joshix

@richslxh No. Get better battery life. Ps, android battery life also sucks a root. Big problem on phone.

@richslxh So if you can't suspend, how do you close the lid and go anywhere? Do you like, move at all in the course of a day?

@richslxh The iphone will get through a workday. If I had it full-on full-time, I dunno, 4 hours maybe. It's an old 3G.
