@bkuhn if you're willing to install the Greasemonkey Firefox add-on the Linterna Magica script plays youtube nicely without non-free sw.

@sazius, @singpolyma, Do these solutions work on !Debian squeeze? That's probably my main issue. @fontana, is this what you do on #Fedora?

@bkuhn I'm using it in squeeze myself. For iceweasel you need pkg xul-ext-greasemonkey and then script from linterna-magica.nongnu.org.

@bkuhn Come to think of it, I am using a backported version of Iceweasel 5.0. But I think it should work with stock squeeze iceweasel too.

@bkuhn On Debian I usually get the video file from the web address with youtube-dl and then play it ofline with mplayer or vlc

@fontana @bkuhn I get #YouTube videos with Clive http://clive.sourceforge.net/ and Google seems to have kept format stable for ages now.

@bkuhn Gnash (0.8.9) with ffmpeg (0.7.1) works great here (!Parabola). Also, you can add &html5=True for FOSS goodness (h.264 or WebM).
