@fontana, so then I don't see where we might differ regarding our positions with respect to #CLA's or ©AA's? I think we're in full agreement

      In 25 mins: I'll be on main stage at !ds2011 for a ©AA / #CLA panel w/ #mmeeks & @sabdfl, moderated by @kaz. @storming said she'd live-dent.

Unfortunately, @storming's #Twitter hookup to identica isn't working! Her live-denting at !ds2011 was tweet only http://twitter.com/storming

I was nervous on #CLA / ©AA !ds2011 panel earlier w/ @sabdfl & #mmeeks. Likely made me seem stiff, but hopefully my points were clear.

BTW,I did indeed again ask @sabdfl to include promises to never proprietarize in !Canonical #CLA's &©AAs &he changed subject w/out answering

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Canonical Ltd. , Mark Shuttleworth

@sabdfl agreed w/ me that you must fully trust any org to sign a CLA or use its -or-later. He admitted !Canonical refuses to use -or-later.

Someone from the crowd at !ds2011 sent me a one-line email while I was on the panel #CLA / ©AA panel: "Wow, Mark's remarks are twisted".

@fontana yes, it was recorded. I don't think there was a winner.

@gpoo @fontana, I don't think there was a winner either. @sabdfl remains skilled at "look over there: money! I'll take you there!" tactics.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Richard Fontana , Mark Shuttleworth , Germán Póo-Caamaño

@gpoo @fontana, Nevertheless, IMO progress was made. IMO @sabdfl sounds more & more like Mårten #Mickos every time he talks about this.

    • Jeff Spaleta Jeff Spaleta

@bkuhn which is ironic considering that Mickos is now steering the Eucalyptus ship after Canonical punted them as a tech.

@bkuhn If they are on the same page with regard to bus strategy..and they can't really cooperate on a shared codebase that speaks volumes.

@fontana,I think the only position where we differ is that I admit !GPL enforcement is easier for non-profits if they have assignment, right?

    • Sorin-Mihai Vârgolici Sorin-Mihai Vârgolici

@bkuhn would you share your sawfish config files(s)?

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn The GNU General Public License , Richard Fontana

@fontana,Discouraging hackers to assign © to trusted NPO means relying on individual hackers to enforce !GPL. Few wanna do so. You disagree?

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Sorin-Mihai Vârgolici

@smv, yeah, I've been meaning to separate out private info from all my config files & push them publicly. Ping me in a month on this.

@fontana @bkuhn: It is one thing to want a license enforced. It is quite another to be willing to do what it takes to enforce it.

    • x1101 x1101 Richard Fontana

@fontana agreed. If you dont want to enforce a license, why choose one that has things to enforce?

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn The GNU General Public License , Richard Fontana , Van Lindberg

@vanl, @fontana has a point. Here's a thought: maybe NPO waits to take ©AA for those who want to enforce when !GPL violation occurs?

@fontana,I've argued to @kaz that !GNOME Foundation should enforce !GPL for GNOME, but you're right:only !FSF & !Conservancy do it right now

@x1101 correct expectation of lots of voluntary compliance if right signal (ie right license) chosen

    • Mike Linksvayer Mike Linksvayer

@bkuhn if GPL enforcement aimed at $ rather than compliance could possibly be profitable, NPOs not primarily fs-mission might be interested

@fontana, IMO the #ChathamHouseRule is an anti-transparency rule, designed to remove accountability & enable cabals. I find it revolting.

@vanl Agreed. Sending legal letters and taking people to court is very complex. Author may want this done, but by someone else. /cc @x1101

@fontana how about joint(?) assignment to developer/host NPO and another to NPO(s) specializing in enforcement?

@fontana are there, er, innovations, developed for mass © lawsuits that could be applied to delegation of FLOSS license enforcement? ...

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Richard Fontana

@fontana, I don't think I am. FLOSS Foundations is "please don't do stupid forwards", which is non-binding & only penalty is booting off.

      @mjray Why?

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Richard Fontana

@fontana, #FLOSSFoundations is elitist as far as invites, I admit. I'm not opposed to invite-only lists. FF is for leaders of FLOSS NPOs.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Jono Bacon , Richard Fontana

@fontana, at some point, around @jonobacon's joining of #FLOSSFoundations, it was extended from "NPO leaders" to also include "NPO funders".

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Richard Fontana

@fontana, yeah, I think the scope of #FLOSSFoundations changed over time. IMO only remaining justification for invite-only is avoid #troll's

    • Michael Dexter Michael Dexter Richard Fontana

@bkuhn @Fontana I trust that Allison invited Jono as acommunity member who "gets stuff done" like the CLS, not as a corporate sponsor.

    • Michael Dexter Michael Dexter Richard Fontana

@bkuhn @Fontana Alternatively, they both work for Canonical and we have a sinister conspiracy on our hands. #not Note that most only lurk.

    • Bradley M. Kuhn Bradley M. Kuhn Michael Dexter

@michaeldexter, CLS started as a corporate event & ISTR Jono was invited before the first CLS anyway. Maybe he was invited for LUG Radio?

    • Michael Dexter Michael Dexter

@bkuhn Suggesting O'Reilly created CLS to shamelessly pimp the book? Canonical didn't have a presence as I recall.

@bkuhn By the way, can we expect a book from you and if so, would you indie publish it to keep profits away from the Man?
