Not Evil? "#Google Admits Handing over European User Data to US Intelligence Agencies http://ur1.ca/4vtps /via @PaoloBrini !Privacy G+
- MatÃas Croce (matux), Taha and CorrisIT and 2 others repeated this.
-
@laurelrusswurm the real question is... how much user data do businesses hand over generally? Your credit card company? Your phone company?
-
@jspaleta People should understand how much private info on them Google already has (and hands over to gov't) before allowing G+ aggregation
-
@laurelrusswurm For biz that is multinational what your govt is may not matter. How much info does Google give to _China_ about you or me?
-
@laurelrusswurm you missed the point. it may matter to you. But short of refusing to do biz with a multinational what power do you have?
-
@laurelrusswurm _ALL_ multinationals could abuse their access to personal information. And no single govt is in a position to police them.
-
@laurelrusswurm how do you stop unfettered corporate activity without mandating unfettered gov't access to corp. data and server?
-
@laurelrusswurm to protect against US spying would you give Russia and China open access to Google's servers? Where does it end?
-
@jspaleta absolutely none.
-
@laurelrusswurm so what is your complaint exactly? You've just admitted your powerless to stop them once you choose to give them your data.
-
@jspaleta btw, i realize multinationals have zero qualms about doing whatever they want with our data
-
@jspaleta ...they could pursue the best interests of their citizens and make trade treaties that curb multinational abuse of citizens & data

@jspaleta Damn straight if Google's servers are open access to *any* government they need to be equally open to all.

@laurelrusswurm how do you know that they aren't at the moment. Canada should make a request to Google for US user data and see what happens
-
@laurelrusswurm talk about what you want or dont want till you run out of breath. Doesn't change that govt data sharing is prob a biz norm.
-
@laurelrusswurm welcome to 2011, where personal info is bought and sold on a daily basis as a commodity, as part of the free market economy.
-
@jspaleta That doesn't make it right.
-
@laurelrusswurm it is what it is. Unless enough individuals stand up and boycott giving personal data to businesses, it will not stop.
-
@laurelrusswurm but people will have to boycott free services is significant numbers for it to matter. Can you give up your gratis services?
-
@jspaleta First people have to understand (a) that it is happening (b) what it means. What gratis services are you talking about?
-
@jspaleta I am fairly attached to Identi.ca which is gratis AND FaiF ... wordpress.com is gratis; as is the home version (and also FaiF)
-
@laurelrusswurm FaiF doesn't protect privacy. There's nothing stopping wordpress.com from handing over info to US govt on request.
-
@jspaleta True. But like any online service I use WordPress has only the information I have chosen to give.
-
@jspaleta But because the Wordpress software is FaiF I can (and do) run wordpress on my own server.
-
@laurelrusswurm We lost the fight for data privacy a decade ago when everyone signed up for store club cards to get in-store yogurt coupons.
-
@laurelrusswurm and didn't everyone who gave their info to Google, also choose to give it? Again I'm not sure what the complaint is.
-
@jspaleta Technological revolution has changed the world incredibly quickly... New tech= shiny = new abuses = new crimes = repression
-
@jspaleta Most folks in the "free world" trust the government and believe Google's promise not to be evil. #G+ !privacy http://ur1.ca/4vtps
-
@laurelrusswurm pffft! Actually, you do know about that--and yes I know it's Rasmussen--Rasmussen poll that suggests t…
-
@benfell I well understand how amazingly uninformed/unaware most people are because I was, myself, only a short while ago.
-
@laurelrusswurm Everyone has photographic memory; some just don't have the film. :-)
-
@annajo6 And some don't see because the film is fogged.
-
@laurelrusswurm Ha! Ha! :-)
