Very glad to see Google buy Motorola Mobility. The can take the patents, sell off the hardware to someone & extend patent protection. #fb

@harishpillay why would they sell off the hardware? I don't see a downside in having their own device brand to carry their OS brands

@jspaleta in order not to compete with other phone makers. Google gives patent cover & let hardware makers innovate.

@harishpillay but is competing with other phone manufacturers a downside from Google's POV?

@jspaleta would be from the manufacturer's POV. Also, I think Google is best NOT to run a hardware shop per se. Focus on their strengths.

@harishpillay 2 years ago would you have listed Mobile OS as a Google strength? Being their own OEM is a nat. progression for the market.

@jspaleta true, but OS is software. Hardware is a very different supply chain and skills set.

@harishpillay sure..and I think that if they are serious about ChromeOS as a disrupting deliverable they'll need those skills in-house.

@jspaleta having in-house hardware skills and actually running a production environment are different. Google would be better off making ...

@jspaleta ... reference designs and getting the actual hardware work done by HTC et al. Keeps the ecosystem happy and customers excited.

@harishpillay I do not agree completely. Hardware and software are equivalent. No laptop battery without firmware, etc...

@harishpillay also, working on #FPGA's is using similar skills (verilog, vhdl). it does take a different mindset, but this even enters s/w!

@gbraad i am not saying that there should be zero hardware. actual production of phones is best left to those who do it well.

@harishpillay agree, I would say these skill groups need to blend more and you see it happening; more vertical integration

@harishpillay for some time, even RedHat partially did this with the #OLPC. working closely with hardware can create great results
