@papabean Yes, you can't follow people from other instances from xmpp

@xma Weirdly, XMPP support got withdrawn from Android relatively late on, which somewhat stymied XMPP client efforts.
-
@dwd sad to read that :(
-
@xma In particular, Google replaced XMPP for their GTalk client with some bizarre flavoured binary mush, claiming various half-truths.
-
@xma Yay for interoperability and open standards, eh?
-
@dwd not completely true: the xmpp stuff was very limited and bound to gtalk
-
@bugabundo: what is GAFYD ?
-
@dwd sauce?
-
@ff But its only used as a debugging channel, right? Oh, wait...
-
@dwd I dont know the present status, but with or without their support you had to use your own stack to make it work
-
@haris For what? This? http://mail.jabber.org/pipermail/jdev/2008-February/027084.html
-
@dwd thanks
-
@xma but but but.. gtalk looks so s exy on android :'(
-
@onedot maybe :D I do not use it but if nothing changes I will probably a) sell my phone or b) use gtalk
-
@xma yes, Google Talk uses standard XMPP ports, but it also uses DNS SRV records to spread the load
-
@xma host -t srv _xmpp-client._tcp.gmail.com !xmpp
-
@xma yes it uses standard xmpp ports
-
@dwd Do google apps domains work with android's gtalk?
-
@dustin ENOCLUE. I don’t have an Android phone, nor a domain to try, either.
-
@dustin But I take your point - if they do, then one *might* infer that XMPP ports were still used.
-
@dustin OTOH, they might try routing everything through GTalk anyway.
-
@bugabundo Excellent, thanks. I plan on trying first hand in a couple of days.
-
@papabean I have to use it a bit to follow people on identica or to see the threads there
