I can't properly argue in 140 chars. I will write a blog post and post a link here. You all are denting to fast for me to reply. !linux

@bognarandras I'm a !linux advocated. I run linux exclusively on ALL my computers and have converted all my friends and family.
-
@techwizrd I eagerly await this post
-
@justinmwhitaker every OS has its downsides ;)
-
@techwizrd take it easy :)
-
@justinmwhitaker !linux is the only OS that protects my freedom. I hate Apple and Microsoft (as companies). All better now? :) (It's true)
-
@demuxer I'm trying, but I'm being flooded by dents. It's all a bit scary for me.
-
@justinmwhitaker !linux is the only OS that protects my freedom. That's why I use !linux.
-
@justinmwhitaker thats one reason I use !linux, too - but I use Windows and OS X as well
-
@techwizrd @marjoleink I'm not currently using !Linux. Was using Ubuntu, but 9.04 screwed the pooch with pulse audio. No time to fix it.
-
@techwizrd I agree with you position. Just sayin', you're not alone :)
-
RT @techwizrd #Linux is the only OS that protects my freedom. That's why I use it #softwarelibre
-
@justinmwhitaker buy system76.com and u wont deal with hardware issues. just like OSX.
-
@jza Not a bad idea. I could give my wife the Gateway 6860FX, and get a Pangolin. Do you have one?
-
@justinmwhitaker yes my laptop is a system-76 and never had any issues. Also an EEEPC with !linux and never had hardware issues.
-
@jza I need something with enough beef for World of Warcraft and podcasting. The EEEPC won't cut it. :P
-
@justinmwhitaker true I got a real laptop and an EEEPC both shipped with !linux. Both never experience hw issues
-
@cabrey Thanks.
-
@techwizrd did you ever read this? http://is.gd/2c9wK
-
@justinmwhitaker Actually #pulseaudio is the first sound system that has worked flawlessly for me. I understand I'm not the only one, though
-
@elnerdodegeek Yes, it's a great article and it makes a lot of good points.
-
@jza @techwizrd the day linux or any OS stop improving is when its dead .. i dont think any linux user is against improving the Platform
Douglas A. Whitfield likes this. -
@phrakture I'm sorry, but that's just nitpicking like GNU/Linux. Users don't understand the difference between the kernel, tools, wm, and de
-
@phrakture You are completely correct though.
-
@techwizrd There's nothing that couldn't stand improvement. You're getting reax to the OS X is prettier idea.
-
@phrakture I thik he's referring to Linux GUI stuffs in general by saying "Linux". It seems clear enough.
-
@techwizrd Im honestly this close to actually starting a project to do just that... if we can get a Linux distribution to rival...
-
@bigbrovar True that. I just think many possible improvements are being skipped over just to play with new tech like Clutter and Plasma.
-
@techwizrd ... MacOSX's flash and overall cool factor and just got the word out, I think Linux would rly make it
-
@techwizrd I think we'll have to sacrifice cutting-edge features for focus on stability and polish tho
-
@techwizrd explain
-
@bigbrovar Splitting Evolution into multiple apps, categorical places bar for Nautilus, better IDE's, easy management of Apache (XAMPP-like)
-
@elnerdodegeek Or just improve a project like !gnome or !ubuntu
-
@techwizrd well that is why its foss u can always make your contribution, beside they are many email client,fm,IDE.. linux is about choice
-
@techwizrd about apache its not meant to be for noobs so u have to learn to use it.. a security should be above else when it comes to server
-
@techwizrd I was thinking about that originally, but I don't think they're quite the right sort for this particular mission...
-
@techwizrd as well, strike up a deal w a company to produce desktops/laptops built specifically for our imaginary distro
-
@techwizrd do a lot of work to make sure everything works together; rebrand and make extensions for all apps in default install...
-
@techwizrd ... to improve integration and compatibility among apps and desktop
-
@bigbrovar I want to, but I'm only a lone coder (although I do run a dev team), and there's only so many project I can juggle at once.
-
@bigbrovar Tell that to the noobs. That's a cop-out answer. You don't have use the GUI (and I prefer CLI).
-
@techwizrd well u dont have to be a coder, file a bug, send a blueprint, file a bug.. sure u can do one of these the idea is participate
-
@techwizrd noobs have to know that foss is about the community and u.. everyone as a role to play, its not a customer , seller relationship
-
@techwizrd a noob who wants to install and use apache most have to learn it there is not easy way round that one.. its for his own good
-
@jza Sorry, point taken. But you were guilty of flaming/trolling too.
-
@bigbrovar Well, why doesn't everyone go back to CLI then? Sometimes, simple point-and-click is nice...
-
@techwizrd point and click is for the desktop .. server is a completely diff ball game
-
@jza I know. I mean for developers. Like a quick guide through the API, an explanantion of how things work in general, patching, etc.
-
@bigbrovar Not necessarily. XAMPP and MAMP have nice following. A simple web-interface for tasks like monitoring server stats would be good
-
@techwizrd at least floss give you a mailing list, IRC rooms and other mediums to contact developers. And it depends which project you are
-
@techwizrd you can go here for usability matters: http://live.gnome.org/UsabilityProject
-
@techwizrd you can go here for usability matters !gnome http://live.gnome.org/UsabilityProject
-
@techwizrd !Gnome Love is for new developers http://live.gnome.org/GnomeLove !kde lso have this
-
@techwizrd I dont think Linux and Apple are targeting the same users on the desktop. I find OS X unusable for what I do.
-
@jza I know. I like and use FLOSS almost exclusively. I'm already subscribed to several mailing lists and I lurk on several IRC channels.
-
@techwizrd I thought gnome-love has exactly that: http://developer.gnome.org/doc/guides/platform-overview/platform-overview.html
-
@xopher I have eral virtual desktops on Windows
-
@xopher and have had them since 1997 or so - so far what KDE offers is way behind what Ive used on Windows; hope there is a better one!
-
@marjoleink different strokes I guess. I find Windows totally unusable (moreso than MacOS). !linux has been my primary desktop for 10+ years
-
@xopher for most things I prefer linux thogh
-
@techwizrd haven't tried glipper in a while, didn't cut it last time though. I use gvim occasionally, but find the mouse gets in my way
-
@techwizrd This could be one of the longest conversations I have seen on #identica #in-context. Could make a good blog post by itself! :-)
-
@marjoleink What're you using for virtual desktops on w32? I haven't found anything I like (I don't like them in #gnome or #kde, either.)
-
@jfm Ive used many but what I like best is XDesk (shareware) - havent tried it on Vista which I just want to get rid of ;)
-
@jfm lots of functionality - I especially XDesks option to define dynamic rules that can determine where an apps window will open
-
@marjoleink I kind of like the projects/activities in #gnome-shell and #Etoile vs standard virtual desktops.
Marjolein Katsma likes this. -
@jfm thanks, Ill have a look at those!
-
@stav I know. It's pretty crazy. 1. Provocative comment 2. Large conversation 3. ??????? 4. PROFIT!
-
@jfm what I most miss in !KDE virtual desktops is the ability to give each a separate background so I know `where` I am
-
@techwizrd It helped set a record for daily dents today!
-
I note that @stav is pointedly not asking me to #dent_faster
-
@stav You have to cut him some slack; he can't remember that he posted the other three.
-
@exador23 I'm giving myself a !neologism award for #quadrudenting, portmanteau quadruple & denting, vt. to post every entry four times
-
@stav I don't follow, but occasionally shows up on identispy. the octoposts happen immediately. must be a problem w laconica tools setup.
-
@frankenspock are you suggesting I blocked it unjustly. I am willing to reconsider.
-
@frankenspock I wouldn't want him to think me #snippy haha
-
@frankenspock @stav it's up to 8 simultaneous posts now. must have switched to the chronic.
-
@stav is "portmanteau" anything like "port?" (the drink). e.g. any port in a storm? ;)
-
@ronkjeffries a portmanteau is a linguistic blend, i.e.: taking two or more words and putting them together to make a brand new one.
-
@jjardon Yes. I currently use Geany and Gedit, but I've been meaning to write my own for some time.
-
@stav Woot!
-
@stav That's why it says ??????. XD
-
@techwizrd making an IDE is not a popular project. But depend your goals, !glade !ajunta and the late gazpacho failed misserably
-
@techwizrd man where are u from XAMPP is not for production systems how many average user ever need to install apache? not my grandmum
-
@techwizrd anyone who wants to use apache should learn to use it security is most important when it comes to servers.. u just have to learn
-
@techwizrd the philosophy of xampp says never use it in a production evn http://is.gd/2cHK2 never sacriface security for ease of use
-
@jza I prefer hand-coding my PyGTK, but Glade/libglade s awesome. PyGTK has awesome documentation too.
-
@jza GtkSourceView has a number of patches in review (code-folding, multi-language syntax highlighting, etc.) that need to go through
-
@bigbrovar You're right. I prefer CLI, but my Friends are scared shitless of the Terminal. They're very used to point-and-click.
-
@techwizrd then there shouldnt come near installing webservers or servers for that matter .. u cant eat your cake and have it .
-
@techwizrd for simple webservers for learning purposes ,, u can try xampp which is available for nix* but i would say learn the real thing
-
@techwizrd there are some things that should never be point and click. point and click as its limitations and can be hard to use somethings
-
@bigbrovar I do know Apache pretty well. I use Apache a lot. Something like phpmyadmin for Apache would be cool though.
-
@techwizrd u can always try cherokee or recommend it to your noobie friends http://is.gd/2cOvU
