@jonkulp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab8GtuPdrUQ how can you not remember it?

I wonder how expensive it would be to incorporate a Faraday cage while I'm re-doing the walls in my house...

    • nybill nybill Windigo

@windigo Grounded metal mesh behind the sheetrock!

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:09:39 UTC
    • mcnalu mcnalu Windigo

@windigo sounds worrisome. Make sure you have a witness so you can at least win a Darwin award should it go horribly wrong.

    • Windigo Windigo nybill

@nybill How much does metal mesh go for these days? :)

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:10:55 UTC
    • Windigo Windigo Linuxchiq (Sarah)

@linuxchiq Might as well - I'll have the walls open anyways! :)

@nybill That brings to mind a lot of interesting possibilities. :))

    • Windigo Windigo mcnalu

@mcnalu http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage - While Wikipedia has lightning bolts in the picture, it really just blocks RF signals. :)

@gomerx Who needs WIFI encryption when you have a Faraday cage!

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:17:44 UTC
    • Windigo Windigo

@johnnynull That would definitely be simpler - I wonder if the cost is comparable...

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:22:19 UTC
    • mcnalu mcnalu Windigo

@windigo ah, i thought you needed it to protect against dodgey wiring and/or lightening strikes.

    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved nybill

@nybill I find naming my access point something like 'Virus_test' or 'come_get_butt_raped' is also effective.

    • nybill nybill Jeff Has Moved

@gomerx LOL now I feel silly for my random string of letters and numbers. I must get more creative.

    • Karsten Wade Karsten Wade Jeff Has Moved

@gomerx TBH, I get upset at people with mean SSIDs broadcasting that shite all over the place. Hide it, don't tell me "YouGoAway".

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:26:55 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved nybill

@nybill I actually use a maximum length WPA2 key, but sometimes I think it's overkill. Doesn't hurt to be safe, though.

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:27:25 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved Karsten Wade

@quaid No, that makes sense. It's much more fun to broadcast an SSID then complain that people are eavesdropping on my 'private' network.

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:29:24 UTC
    • nybill nybill Jeff Has Moved

@gomerx I mean my AP's name a random string. I use wpa2 as well. My key was generated from a whole sentience.

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:31:56 UTC
    • Windigo Windigo mcnalu

@mcnalu Heh, well, I do have some questionable wiring in my house, and lightning's no good - so an additional bonus? :)

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:33:35 UTC
    • x1101 x1101 nybill

@nybill was that sentence misspelled and everything?

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:35:25 UTC
    • mcnalu mcnalu Windigo

@windigo yes, sounds like a great plan. Oh, but the windows?

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:39:53 UTC
    • nybill nybill x1101

@x1101 You know I no longer remember what it was!

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:41:20 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved nybill

@nybill I actually just use 'gomer' as my SSID. To their credit, over half the people in my area are using something other than 'NETGEAR.'

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:45:03 UTC
    • x1101 x1101 nybill

@nybill I was messing with you, since you typed sentience rather than sentence (this is rich, me poking fun at someone about spelling)

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:45:18 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved Karsten Wade

@quaid I don't actually use an offensive name, though. Just something to differentiate me from everybody els.

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:46:26 UTC
    • nybill nybill x1101

@x1101 LOL I probably picked the wrong suggestion from spell check. But, I'm sure I had it mangled beforehand. :P

    • Jesse Keating Jesse Keating

@quaid the sexually explicit SSIDs are even worse :/

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:49:12 UTC
    • nernie nernie Jeff Has Moved

@gomerx: I name mine (sometimes funny stuff), but normally don't broadcast the SSID.

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:52:03 UTC
    • x1101 x1101 nybill

@nybill that just means I am in good company!

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:55:25 UTC
    • Jeff Has Moved Jeff Has Moved nernie

@nernie It's annoying that broadcasting SSID is the default and some devices don't work without it. Maybe that'll change one day.

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 18:58:27 UTC
    • Windigo Windigo

      @johnnynull Awesome - thanks!

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 19:02:10 UTC
    • nernie nernie Jeff Has Moved

@gomerx: I agree. I have to broadcast it every time I want to use to wireless on my phone. Otherwise it doesn't see it... #lame

@windigo *I've fallen down the stairs and can't get up. Lucky I have my emergency cell phone* ..."Damn you paint!"

@nybill Heh, emergency cellphone? I'll have to get an emergency netbook. Still plenty of wifi inside!

@windigo emailing emergency services to see if they do SIP for an emergency call

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 19:39:07 UTC
    • Windigo Windigo Gordon Sinclair

@thistleweb That would be best, since I can never remember their main number. "0-118-999... what was that next number again? Blast!"

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 19:41:22 UTC
    • Muel Kiel Muel Kiel

@jonkulp that was the start of the IT Crowd new emergency number, which I guess means you got the reference?

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 19:55:48 UTC
    • Muel Kiel Muel Kiel

@jonkulp so you half got the reference? this is starting to confuse me. Can I ssh into your brain for a bit and see if I can understand?

      Thursday, 01-Sep-11 20:04:59 UTC
    • Windigo Windigo

@jonkulp I can hum the song, which got me the first couple numbers - but that middle part I lose. It ends in 725.... 3, of course. :D
