Thinking about what !linux distro to intall on new laptop.. #mint debian !fedora #crunchbang I've always used debian based, but like fed also
about 9 months ago from web-
@pirolocito you should install a really free one: http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.html !linux !libre
-
@pirolocito I vote for a Debian ;) you have more flexibility in what to install and which DE use.
-
@pirolocito I'm always gonna say !debian or debian based :p try !crunchbang why not?
-
@erkanyilmaz no can do :) does not suit my needs, I even need to work with comercial closed source software, is a work pc.. But Dyne rules.
-
@erkanyilmaz I translated some dynebolic how to in far past something around 1999 ;)
-
@ajpaulson I know !crunchbang pretty well, its a possibility, much lighter than !mint
-
@pirolocito nice + thanks
-
@pirolocito !aptosid works great for me. it's a !debian #sid based rolling release distro.
-
@erkanyilmaz debian is really free to, but it is not in this list because it gives choice to install from non-free repos
-
@samarthur I'm using Debian sid/experimnetal and it is pretty stable too
-
@darkestkhan someone should do a fork of #debian or wait until new !gnewsense comes out then
-
@erkanyilmaz what fork? it would be a Debian without contrib and non-free repositories, which are not even used by default
-
@darkestkhan how about writing to !fsf + talk with 'em about this?
-
@erkanyilmaz because of load of crap like this one: http://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html
-
@erkanyilmaz in fact gNewSense is not free, as they ship with gnu documentation with invariant sections, which makes them proprietary
-
@darkestkhan thx for the info, did not know that about !gnewsense
-
@darkestkhan hah, I did know debian is free but I wasn't aware of gnewsense's situation. Good to know we're better off with debian :)
-
@rysiek I haven't used aptosid as main OS but I found that its few tweaks (custom kernel/no sudo by default) make it break differently.
-
@darkestkhan That's fantastic news. I haven't looked around much (studying physics/engineering) but is there a Debian sid users group?
-
@samarthur haven't noticed much changes with the kernel; and does Debian contain sudo by default? I remember it hasn't a short while ago
-
@mvdan that is the only reason why gnu documentation is non-free section of Debian
-
@samarthur I don't know about any debian sid user groups
-
@darkestkhan That needs to have a bug report filed... :P
-
@rysiek For me Debian halts propagating /dev on boot but aptosid doesn't (kernel tweak?) Debian sudo surprised me too. (6.0 install to sid)
-
@darkestkhan Exactly which section of Gnu documentation is invariant ?
-
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc-4.6.1/gcc.pdf look at second page
-
@darkestkhan And for this page (643) you say that gnewsense is not a free distro ?
-
pages are: 1, 657, 658 and 728; you can't change the title; yep, it is exactly like that (+ (I think) all other gnu manuals)
-
funny how they are not complying with their own license (invariant section back cover)
-
@darkestkhan The GNU take on Invariant Sections from 2003 is.gd/hNPwCv
-
@darkestkhan Sorry but you have to read the GPL license first, before talk about Invariant Sections and assume that gns isnt a free distro
-
@darkestkhan Look at gnu fdl wikipedia for ex - Explains about Invariant section and for which reason exists.
-
I read it, and Invariant Sections can't be changed and/or removed, which is in breach with 4th freedom
