Are there any !GNU !LinuxLibre distros working on getting !GNOME 3 working? !Blag !gNewSense !Parabola !Trisquel !Linux

I think Parabola is the only one with it currently in place. I could be mistaken, I know its in Arch.
-
trisquel has gnome 3 too iirc(failing that I'm sure that there's a ppa)
-
Next !blag will use xfce by default, I think. We don't like gnome3.
-
@dpic Gnome3 "more or less" requires 3d acceleration, the vast majority of video cards do NOT have free 3d accleration drivers/firmware.
-
That's just plain wrong. Practically all modern AMD and Intel chips work well enough with free drivers. Not sure about nvidia w/ nouveau.
-
@freezombie Intel yes. ati/amd not even close! check hnode, they require non-free firmware.
-
@freezombie h-node.com -- Video Cards / ATI / Works with 3d = No video cards found..
-
@freezombie Perhaps, the main problem aren't free drivers, the main problem for me is free firmware for those VGA :(
-
Fluxbox FTW! :) !fluxbox

@freezombie yaourt -S xf86-video-nouveau nouveau-firmware nouveau-dri
-
I have nouveau with Gnome3 running and it works ok, but highly depends on the exact chip you have.
-
well yeah, I knew that the driver existed. I just can't judge how good it is since I don't currently use any NVIDIA hardware.
-
@freezombie I'm using it and I feel that it works a little bit faster with the desktop / shell apps (not games).
-
Compared to the proprietary driver? Interesting. Then again, those aren't as well integrated into X.org, the AIGLX support may be flaky.
-
@freezombie Yes. But it's only a feeling of more "fluid" animations, not an expert advice.
-
@tekk Nice! @junichiro Aw, sad ]= @zykotick9 Not true and the h-node list isn't well maintained. Also fallback mode is pretty too!

I thought Trisquel 5 ships with Gnome 2.32? I might give them a spin if your sure they have Gnome 3. CC @dpic
-
!trisquel doesn't come with gnome 3, it will have it available on the next release, but not default, nor now.
-
#Parabola is likely the only !fsf approved distro w/ gnome3 http://is.gd/aXVYdK Sadly Im not fond of Parabola's gentoo esque install @dpic
-
One could use Vanillux & not use non-free. If you dont consider Debian's kernel #faif @jself has an apt repo for Linux-Libre to right things
-
@wes Oh cool, I hadn't heard of Vanillux before! Have there been any updates on an official rolling release !Debian? http://cut.debian.net/

@trashheap 99% of wifi cards uses binary firmwares
-
exaggeration. All atheros cards are free and every broadcom I've tried.
-
@drizztbsd @tekk Check this: http://ur1.ca/54zyt. May be is useful. ;)
-
@trashhep gentooesque?
-
@drizztbsd citation required. I'm sure the number is high, but 99% is way off AFAICT
-
@ark74 Ah, unfortunate. I was looking for something with it as the default. The 99% @drizztbsd gave doesn't matter. We want free software.

That percentage does't seem accurate. But in general I agree which is why I usually buy atheros chips. Not sure what you are replying too.
-
Arch/Parabola doesnt provide an installer so much as a set of scripts and an installation manual. Gentoo last I used it, was similar.
-
Maybe my impression is mistaken?
-
I asked the same thing here in dentica land the other day. Outside of their prototype snapshots ive heard no news.
-
I actually don't prefer rolling releases typically. Just love Debian Stable and love Gnome. Wanna try the new shiny thing.
-
Debian stable is awesome, but so many people use Testing when they really need a rolling release.
Danny Piccirillo likes this. -
I value the stability of stable... Testing has odd problems for me from time to time. The current mix mash of Gnome 2/3 for example.
-
Yes, exactly why testing isn't right even for those who like Debian's "bleeding edge" and we need a stable rolling release too!

Since not all videcards are 3D capable with free software, then it is not a good idea to make it the default Desktop Environment
-
@trashheap I use sid and I have no complaints whatsoever. Although I do not use any DE either, so it makes things easier.
-
I continue to hope that Gnome will continue to develop fallback mode. Or develop some sort of software rendered alternative to clutter.
-
Other instabilities in sid/testing would plague me too. Like the icedtea-plugin issues http://is.gd/zFI5Dl I value stability :-)
-
@drizztbsd Yes, my wifi card use firmware... Do you know if someone can make a firmware? some info on that?
-
@cnngimenez I guess the people who made the OpenFWWF (for Broadcom cards) might have something to say or could help http://is.gd/u6JZie

@valkov thanks! I'll take a look...
-
@trashheap true. I just safe-upgrade and everything works flawlessly. Though I'd use stable if I was to run a server.
-
@trashheap I used to think there is a decision made in favour of the latter option. Dont have a link atm though.
-
A link if you could find one would be most appreciated!

Are there any !GNU !LinuxLibre distros with @gnome 3 by default? !Blag may drop !GNOME sadly, !gNewSense & !Trisquel waiting for upstream?
Danny Piccirillo likes this. -
@dpic I think you'll need to wait for the implementation of http://ur1.ca/7elvo for free distros to find it acceptable.
-
@dpic And then, you'll need a machine with a CPU that is fast enough to do the heavy lifting in software instead.
-
@dpic Hardware accelerated 3D graphics is often problematic from a freedom perspective so it seems that most free distros skip GNOME 3.
-
@dpic I suspect the logic goes something like... users treated like second-class citizens, tempted to install non-free to use GNOME Shell.
-
Software rendering <5 months away & I've had no issues with !gnome shell and #nouveau or free ATI drivers. Plus Intel graphics are common.
Danny Piccirillo likes this. -
@kinlok Because that't not true at all? See my post directly above yours. Don't tell me Trisquel will use Unity...
Danny Piccirillo likes this. -
That's why I didn't say "often", not "always". And what does everyone else do? I consider it bad form that GNOME Shell depends on this.
-
blag will use xfce.
