Is that supposed to be ported to the secrets framework when it's done?

    • MetalByte MetalByte KDE , Roger Pixley

@skreech2 Would be nice, but I think no, it's just an external addon.

I'm aware but kwallet is to be deprecated for a co-developed secrets framework.

    • Alex Fiestas Alex Fiestas KDE , Roger Pixley

@skreech2 Well, as you said "It is to be..." atm KWallet is rock solid and working perfectly so the more support it has, the better

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null KDE , Alex Fiestas

@afiestas It is not working perfectly until it's plug-and-play with Firefox.

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null KDE , Alex Fiestas

@afiestas Nor is it working perfectly until it's a reasonable alternative to keepassx and its ilk.

    • Alex Fiestas Alex Fiestas KDE , Johnny Null

@johnnynull well it works well enough for me tough I haven't use keepasxx, my point was tht KWallet should be supported nevertheless

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null KDE , Alex Fiestas

      @afiestas That I'll agree with.

@johnnynull BTW if you have suggestions for secret service now is a good time for collaborate with it :p

@afiestas Very sorry, I don't get what you mean by this.

    • Roger Pixley Roger Pixley KDE , Johnny Null

!KDE and !GNOME are working on one way to manage passwords and secrets that is compatible with both. the secretservice

    • Alex Fiestas Alex Fiestas KDE , Johnny Null

@johnnynull If you have ideas for KDE Secret Service, you should share them with the developers

@skreech2: What's the status on that? I love #KWallet, but would be very much in favour of a common (FreeDesktop-based) solution.

@skreech2 Thanks very much for the explanation. Now how the hell is it I didn't hear of this?

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null KDE , Alex Fiestas

@afiestas There's no secret. It should function as I just said KWallet should, which does very poorly, if at all.

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null KDE , Alex Fiestas

@afiestas In addition, this is what people say constantly on the KDE forums. Are they ever even read?

    • Alex Fiestas Alex Fiestas KDE , Johnny Null

@johnnynull And how is that? can you add a bug with your idea?

    • skarn skarn KDE , Johnny Null

@johnnynull It's not a matter of secrets... "Secret Service" is the name of the new GNOME/KDE shared password system...

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null Alex Fiestas

@afiestas So to clarify, the KDE project needs me to file a bug report to figure out KWallet/SecretService should integrate w/Firefox?

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null KDE , Roger Pixley , skarn

@skarn Thanks, @skreech2 already explained that. I was doing a play on words. ;-)

Going along very nicely. One of the areas that's really stupid to be DE specific so everyone is happy about it being a shared secret :)

    • Roger Pixley Roger Pixley Johnny Null

Is that the basis of your comparison to Keepassx? Works with Firefox?

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null Roger Pixley

@skreech2 no, but since Kwallet doesn't either, at least with keepassx, you have an easy to use, secure vault. Not so with Kwallet.

    • Roger Pixley Roger Pixley Johnny Null

What makes keepassx securely easy that Kwallet doesn't have?

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null Roger Pixley

@skreech2 The way you interact with Kwallet sucks. Big time. It does not function like keepassx. Have you ever used it?

    • Marjolein Katsma Marjolein Katsma Android OS , Roger Pixley

@skreech2 the fact that Keepass(x) has versions for many OSs? I have portable ones on my USB, one on my !Android & another on Debian/Xfce

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null Android OS , Marjolein Katsma , Roger Pixley

@marjoleink @skreech2 Keepassx is like a password file-manager. Kwallet is some obscure thing that works on 50% of what it should.

    • Marjolein Katsma Marjolein Katsma Android OS , Marjolein Katsma

@skreech2 this means I can use KeePass across 4 different operating systems (OSX, Windows, Android and Debian) with *1* database

    • Matthew Gregg Matthew Gregg Marjolein Katsma

@marjoleink I was going to commit to an app like Keepass, decided to use a remember-able hash instead. No software to rely on.

    • Marjolein Katsma Marjolein Katsma Matthew Gregg

@mcg a rememberable hash for hundreds of accounts, passwords, credit card numbers, pin codes, with accompanying notes & attachments?

    • Marjolein Katsma Marjolein Katsma Matthew Gregg

@mcg maybe I'm missing something, but KeePass maintains a database. mine is half-full of things that are not passwords but related

    • Matthew Gregg Matthew Gregg Marjolein Katsma

@marjoleink So it's more than a password manager?

    • Roger Pixley Roger Pixley Johnny Null

No :-) That's what I'm asking how does it function? If it's across lots of stuff then wait for Secret Service first.

    • Marjolein Katsma Marjolein Katsma Matthew Gregg

@mcg it's a password manager at heart, sure, but much more than that and I use it that way. forgot to mention URLs ;)

    • Matthew Gregg Matthew Gregg Marjolein Katsma

@marjoleink Ah, well anyhow, using a hash you can remember for passwords, especially for the many accounts you use is very helpful.

    • Johnny Null Johnny Null Roger Pixley

@skreech2 OK, thanks for your input. I'll refrain from having passwords until then.

    • Roger Pixley Roger Pixley Android OS , Marjolein Katsma

With the exception of Android I could do that with Kwallet as well but if you need agnostic tools then of course use them

    • Marjolein Katsma Marjolein Katsma Matthew Gregg

@mcg sure. but not all the other related stuff as well: for some entries my notes sections (acount data, URLs, etc) are long - and useful.

    • Marjolein Katsma Marjolein Katsma Android OS , Roger Pixley

@skreech2 as it turned out, having an Android version too proved to be very useful on several occasions already - wouldn't give it up

    • Roger Pixley Roger Pixley Android OS , Marjolein Katsma , Johnny Null

@marjoleink @johnnynull Not saying you should. Just trying to see if Kwallet should be keepassx if what is wanted is Keepassx
