Got myself into a piss poor spot here I think. My ubuntu USB isn't booting...and grub seems to be gone so no windows access or anything else
-
@cringer63 Is it possible that you accidentally had the Ubuntu installer install grub on your USB drive?
-
@windigo ubuntu installer never got far enough to do anything, just far enough to delete my f15 partition then not make a new ext4 partition
-
@cringer63 eeek! You can chroot in from a live CD and repair GRUB.
-
@cringer63 Maybe you can fix it with Gparted Live.
-
@cringer63 Hmm, maybe losing /boot broke grub enough then? :(
-
Yes, Fedora would do a /boot partition by default. If that's gone there could be a problem.
-
@gomerx Ooooh, right. I was thinking of things from a Debian standpoint. I really should try RPM distros more.
-
I guess I've always done it that way since I started on Red Hat. A /boot partition really helps if you run 5 distros like me.
-
@gomerx I think I've run Fedora for about a month total (on different occasions) & I've been using Linux since the 90's. I'm a Debian guy.;)
-
I'm a Debian guy too these days. I ran Fedora a lot in the early days, but I could stand a reinstall every 6 months.
-
@gomerx It just seemed every fedora distro I tried was KDE. Between that and the subtle differences in the root structure, I always ran back
-
Oops, I _couldn't_ satand a reinstall every 6 months. So I wound up on Debian.
-
@gomerx that's what drove me away from Fedora,every time I upgraded using yum something would go wrong or the upgrade wouldn't run well
-
I may need to stop using spaz for identi.ca, I seem to be missing half of a conversation I started since the new format came about
-
In the early days upgrading with YUM wasn't supposed to work. Even a proper upgrade with an install CD would fail about 50% of the time
-
@gomerx never attempted an upgrade with a CD, back in the 'early days' for me was only Fedora 9 (first time I used Fedora)
-
@gomerx Fedora 10 was my favourite, it really was a well polished distro IMO, but I haven't used it since 14 TBH
-
I have 14 on my laptop because Debian didn't support some of the hardware well. Fedora 14 and 15 have been stable (except for GNome 3).
-
Oh. Yes, I can't remember when they actually started supporting yum upgrades. Still they always recommend a fresh install.
-
@gomerx I think I downloaded F15 XFCE but didn't actually install it
-
@gomerx oh yes it was always there like a disclaimer *NOT RECOMMENDED: use a fresh install via CD*
-
@gomerx You know, I read that as 'Couldn't' the first time. Maybe we all 'tpyo' alike. :D
-
I generally don't correct myself, but that one seemed important.
-
@kevie: only when upgrading? you were lucky
-
I kept 2 root partitions. I'd clone to the second partition, then upgrade the copy. It provided some safety in cases of disaster.
-
@thistleweb now that I'm starting to feel a bit better, do you fancy having a yarn on Monday night?
-
@kevie: sure
-
@gomerx probably a wise move :)
