Problem is that Gnome 3 supersedes Gnome 2, which admittedly got quite clunky. (Debian) GNU/Linux doesn't really support downgrades. @sazius

As !Debian #unstable moved to !gnome3 (inflexible, 3D-acceleration-dependent), I moved to !LXDE.

I use gnome-shell-fallback as workaround for broken graphic drivers which cause characters to disappear. It is nearly identical to gnome2.

I use Fluxbox on laptop which is good but doesn't provide nice applets on panel.

lxde or xfce should be the default DE on !debian , gnome is quite heavy and taxing on the hw resources and human brains (nerves)

@mariuz i'd rather say the default DE should be none or any :-)

@mariuz can't agree, !gnome is just still the best experience out of the box for most people moving to the platform.

@yareckon actually I have felt people more are more confortable with !KDE since it has a more windows-like feel to it.

@jza I like !kde because it does things in a smarter way, it suits well my needs

True, but then there is #xfce, #kde, #lxde etc. Also I hear that the Gnome3 "fallback mode" is getting better, and will be selectable in gdm.

@sazius Thought they were going to remove the fallback mode?
