It would be nice if StatusNet allowed you to keep the same identity regardless of which instance you are on.

@gomerx Oooh, that'd be kinda awesome...
-
Yes. If one instance is down, you can post from somewhere else. And you always keep the same username. Worth looking into.
-
yeah, that would be epic.
-
@gomerx excellent idea! portable identities.
-
Yeah, I've been thinking about moving to the StatusNet instance at parlementum, but I'll loose all my subscribers and I have to refollow etc
-
@gomerx that would be awesome!
i would love to be able to keep my friends and such, regardless of which instance i used. -
That's why when I move I'm moving once and for all. I've seen people jump around so much I lose track of them.
-
I'm most interested in re-subscribing to people, so I'll go through them one by one and re-add. My subscribers will catch up.
-
I've thought about ways portable identities could be implemented, but I have no idea how hard it would be. Maybe it's being worked on
-
you mean like this?
-
and this??
-
and this??? :)
-
@exador23 Considering how often my self identity changes, why would I expect software to keep up?
-
No, you still show up as 3 different accounts. I mean something more than having the same name on multiple instances.

Of course that would mean no one could create an account without checking every other instance for the User ID. Which could be a problem.

@gomerx why switch instances at all? why not just have a software download on everyone's computer that serves as a single-user instance?
-
@gomerx force openid on the world wide ensure uniqueness.
-
@gomerx so what if your account (only) lives on your *own* machine while posting on/from different nodes?
-
Yeah, I think that's what OpenID is for.
-
Yeah, right now I'm thinking about jumping to parlementum or setup my own SN instance. But haven't decided yet.
-
Yes. I'm just starting to find OpenID useful.
-
That said, I violently disagree with the idea. There's a reason we domain names in email addresses.
-
How do you post from a node without having an account? An E-mail style relay system? Sounds like nirvana for spammers.
-
I was thinking about having an entire account sync on up to 2 or 3 instances a la Hadoop. That would be complicated, though.
-
Right. THe more I think about it, the more I realize the advantages of "user@domain" as a unique ID.
-
@gomerx by having an account (allowance to post) *for* your own unique identity which lives on your own machine?
-
@gomerx something like that may even *help* with spam control - in order to post you need to gain permission to post first
-
So have an account for your account on another instance. Just send all dents to (gomerx@identi.ca)@dent.gomertronic.com. Complicated.
-
@gomerx maybe prove your good intentions first in a 'sandbox'-like node before other nodes allow an id to post via theirs #thinkingaloud
-
Maybe OpenID is better. It still seems clinky, but at least it already exists.
-
@gomerx maybe complicated... you need an account for your ID/profile but the latter lives on your machine - I can see possibilities
-
That's another common problem in these situations. Just because someone else validated you doesn't mean I should.
-
@gomerx OpenID is I think half-way there but would need to be extended (or you'd need a wrapper maybe).
-
@gomerx Yeah, I was thinking of an "Identity Forward" or something, that when people subscribed to one account, it forwarded them to another
-
@gomerx no, but a node could set a (configurable) quorum - and it could work both ways: banned from too many nodes could auto-ban
-
@gomerx the idea is to completely de-couple publishing (nodes) and identities (profiles).

Well, I'm not one to suggest solutions for other people to build. When I know a lot more maybe I can come up with something I can implement
-
@evan if that was to exist, wouldn't it mean that there would be one parent server, i.e. all instances would merge into one?
-
And to do that without a central directory or some central management of nodes is a challenge.
-
@gomerx absolutely. but I don't think it's impossible...
-
@gomerx maybe a FOAF-like network where nodes 'know' friend nodes - there's no central in FOAF but it can be 'navigated'
-
@gomerx I think we need a system with spam control built-in from the start.
-
@gomerx both SN and T failed in that respect but after initial inertia T evolved faster and better, now has a largely automated system
