      @eightyeight Most clients only show someone's away state on request, if at all. I think you have to expicitly whois to get it.

      @eightyeight There's no automatic alerting mechanism, IRC being a request-reply system, so it's not possible to do it right either.

      @ralesk yes, but there is a right way. it's '/away message' and '/whois user'. anything else is just unnecessary

      @eightyeight Having to manually /whois is not right. Especially these days when many IRC users are not adept IRC users aware of /whois.

      @eightyeight So, it would be great, if it were possible to know automatically, whether someone is away. IIRC the protocol can't do that.

      @ralesk well, some clients, esp. gui, query the server automatically for status updates. #xchat is one such client.
