Why are geeks so averse to using the mouse?
about 6 months ago from web-
@erez For most of my day to day tasks, using a mouse slows me down considerably.
-
@meir that's what I mean, it's actually faster, but geeks refuse to accept any of the existing evidence
-
@erez: got me confused, which one is faster ?
-
Mouse use is faster. Keyboard use is perceived as faster due to an attention blink phenomenon.
-
@erez: I don't think it's that clear cut, as it cuts both ways (e.g: muscle memory with the keyboard).
-
Slightly (or heavily, depends) overrated. And for some actions, mainly window management, useless
-
Not to mention that what does X in one application does Y in another, like typing :wq in a word processor
-
@erez: Alt+F4 closes all, no need to reach for the mouse and travel to the window corner
-
But interestingly, the process of "reaching for the mouse and travelling to the window's corner" is actually *faster* than hitting Alt+F4.
-
@erez: One has to put quite a cognitive effort placing the cursor over a small target. OTOH geeks can hit alt+f4 in their sleep.
I K likes this. -
@meir kill -9 <pid> is better, but not faster, and does require cognitive actions
-
@ik5: Heh :-)
-
@erez Because when a non-geek goes to a PC's mouse, I go to the keyboard on the same PC and do for him what he wanted before he even starts
-
Do you? Because experiments show you're not much faster with the keyboard as you think. Emphasis on think.
-
Bah. Of course not, but I'm referring to window management, selection and movement actions.
-
@erez Depends on the task. Its Interface-dependent. I wont burn a cd with the keyboard. Even of I can
-
We tend to be doing things that require the keyboard. When your hands are already on the keyboard it's faster to just use the keyboard.
-
That's depends on the task, and research does show that for most keyboard vs. mouse task, the mouse is faster.
