That comic just convinced me to learn dvorak. Slowly grinding a message out with it now!
-
@jameselian why learn dvorak instead of Colemak. It seems so much easier to learn
-
Just had a look at the layout. I really like that Dvorak has the vowels clustered, that makes more sense to me than Colemak.
-
That is nice to hear. I used a program called #klavaro to learn to touch type in Dvorak. I am still using it to improve my typing speed.
-
hmmmm... a program to help... Might have a look if typing of the dead has a linux port
-
I use an old Ubuntu based distro (#gnewsense), the program was available in the repository by default.
-
@jameselian yeah, but I just could never get used to having zxcv []{} somewhere else. No way I could do anything without those shortcuts
-
@pm, the human brain is highly plastic. you can bend it. It is just a matter of time & you'll get used to the change.

@rsiddharth You missunderstood me. I am a programmer and use brackets all the time, so dvorak would slow me down a lot
-
@pm Thats why I'm using http://identi.ca/url/61037414
-
@pm, you have a point. Look if the #Programmer_Dvorak , that @jameselian has pointed out, interests you.
-
@pm I learned programmer dvorak all the way, and switched back to qwerty b/c my writing speed with normal keyboards had dropped by 50%.
-
Besides the fact that dvorak is aimed at the english writing. It has not that many advantages for me when typing in catalan or spanish.
-
Addicted to Buffy and Angel (watching both at the same time), but it's really not good enough to make it into my dreams
-
@mvdan jepp: You need a layout optimized for your own language. I’m working on one for German and English (70% germen 30% english).
-
@pm I agree. I have all my brackets on a third keyboard layer using caps-lock for switching to them → http://neo-layout.org
-
Might work, but even if I found a layout for three languages, what if some day I had to use a regular one? I'd be confused and slow.
-
#matt_mullenweg on Dvorak : http://ur1.ca/669nk .
-
@mvdan you’d switch it to your layout by inserting a USB-stick :) - or just paid the price. For me the advantage is worth it (convenience)
-
Since catalan and english are so different, a modified dvorak layout wouldn't mean much improvement. In my case, I don't feel it's necessary
-
Day 3 of the switch, and I'm almost at the point where I can type legibly, though very slowly
-
@jameselian, great going. Patience is your true friend.
-
@rsiddharth Forgot to mention, i did end up using klavaro. Nice simple helpful program.
-
@jameselian, I first used #klavaro to learn to touch type qwerty. Now, I am using it daily to get my fingers acquainted to #Dvorak.
-
Klavaro...that's the Esperanto word for keyboard. Is that a program or something?
-
Yep. (Touch-)typing tutor. Pretty decent one, imo.
-
I'll check it out. I don't think I used a program to learn to touch-type Dvorak, so that's a new concept to me.
-
@patrickniedzielski, That's news for me & yes #klavaro is a program -- a touch-typing tutor : http://ur1.ca/674im
-
It looks really interesting! Thanks for the link.
-
@mvdan If you created your own, it could make your layout great for catalan and not too bad for english (that’s what I need)
-
@mvdan not too bad means: much better than qwerty (that’s not hard :) ), but worse than dvorak.
-
Dvorak is definitely better overall. It's just the standarized qwerty layout thing, you know.

@mvdan jepp, I know… if you’re a sysadmin, dvorak would likely be hard to use. If you’re a coder, things are different.
-
I learned programmer dvorak, it was easy to handle with. I'll type *a lot* all along my career, not sure if I'll ever use it.
-
there are many benefits to !dovark that #colemak doesn't address. colemak was about minimal learning curve first, efficiency second.
-
being a !dvorak typist, i have no problems with ctrl-insert, shift-insert and shift-delet, which also works on qwerty
-
yeah. that is one major drawback with the layout. it's ascii designed, although some international variants exst.
-
You aren't in the Dvorak group, so you can't tag it. Note how the '!dvorak' in your dent isn't clickable.
-
@takeshitakenji you may want to fix your client. Not only am I in the group, I created it, and am still the only admin.
-
@eightyeight @takeshitakenji you're both wrong. The dent you're talking about went to the "dovark" group :P

Client? If you didn't notice, I posted this from 'web'.
-
@eightyeight My official StatusNet Web instance didn't make your !dvorak a clickable link either. Probably something up with identi.ca.
-
@jankusanagi wrong about what? i _am_ the sole admin of that group, and i _did_ create it. http://ur1.ca/67m4r clearly shows this
-
@arielmt then either something in your browser is killing it, or there is something wrong with the server. see http://ur1.ca/67m4r
-
@jankusanagi Professor Dovark, the evil arch-nemesis of Dr. !Dvorak who invented a potion that causes people to mix letters and typo.
-
meh. wrong reply.
-
@takeshitakenji then either something in your browser is killing it, or there is something wrong with the server. see http://ur1.ca/67m4r
-
@eightyeight read carefully my dent and your previous one :P
Neil Hodges likes this. -
Either that or you typed 'dovark' instead of 'dvorak'. Whoops!
-
@takeshitakenji ah, indeed. Fair enough. :)
-
@jankusanagi yes. i see it now
-
@eightyeight http://s.thornton2.com/notice/203112 The bangtag was typoed. Swap-letter typos in !dvorak are easy, one of its few drawbacks.

@arielmt yup. get it all the time whenr typing fast. due to the constant alternation of the hands, it's bound to happen
-
@eightyeight makes me glad I'm a qwerty typist :)
-
@ralesk hah!
-
@eightyeight that’s quite cool!
