rd @neilhimself Are there still traditional cardboard Guy Fawkes masks? Or are they all V for Vendetta Masks, w/royalties to Warner Bros?
-
warner bros. I like it b/c of the irony & conflict. tw doesn't look good when people protest w/ their masks, but they're not big on losing $
-
@tekk Irony: Anonymous using warner bros © V-masks to combat oppressive © laws paid for by warner bros w/profits from V for Vendetta
-
@tekk Also: Guy Fawkes is an iconic UK historical personage with his own holiday; Guy Fawkes masks used to not enrich Warner Bros.
-
yeah, and the best part is that fawkes was less freedom fighter and more crazy catholic who wasn't big on anglicans
-
but warner bros s/n profit from national UK holiday ... imagine BBC made George Washington film & Americans had to pay royalties for own use
-
shouldn't Warner bros have to pay UK for use of national icon?
-
I'm not big on the precedence set by that. would you need to pay the UK to have royal family stuff? They're national icons, etc.
-
I'm not a fan of it, but I'd rather have wb profit off of fawkes and have V to begin with than not have V made b/c of royalties not paid
-
@tekk Far as I'm concerned, historical figures are in public domain; I don't care if warners makes the movie; but s/n have right to © Fawkes
-
@tekk i would rather have wb not make the movie than see warner bros steal heritage and assume ownership of it & charge rent to true owners
-
so you're thinking of perhaps moving public domains to more of a cc-by-sa? That could work..
-
@tekk They say copying is theft but in reality it isn't stolen because the original still exists, ergo not theft ...
-
@tekk ... while taking from the public domain and locking up with copyright IS theft. I prefer !PublicDomain not be stolen from the public.
