why do people demand free/open software but accept closed and locked hardware? !linux !freesoftware !fsfe

@qihardware very often people don't know they have a choice.
-
@qihardware: in my humble opinion is hardware something totaly different then software... but I can't explain that in 140 letters :D
-
@qihardware: maybe because it works? !linux !freesoftware !fsfe
-
@bdesmet so you prefer closed hw ? if so why?
-
@qihardware: I don't prefer it over open hardware, I just don't really care.. but send me an e-mail to b i e r t i e [AT] g m a i l
-
@qihardware can accept it when it's the only viable choice & if I can run 100%, or close, Free Software. I used a Nokia before a !freerunner
-
@qihardware Because it is mostly pointless, until it also features a matter replicator to give you a chip factory. Agree, !FSFE members?
-
@ruiseabra sure,!linux on it,is a start,but even with a banana,a cage is still a cage. This one prevents freedom,innovation+collaboration...
-
@qihardware ... What would be useful is well-documented flashable hardware like WRT54GL. Things to put Android on, or a @FreeSoftware GPS.
-
@mjjzf so a piece of hw that can be controlled, located, reset+spied on from the outside is ok as long as it runs !linux and !freesoftware?
-
@qihardware Always Innovating is making an open hardware netbook: Touch Book. But they don't even have a Wikipedia article http://tr.im/wSGt
Ole-Morten Duesund likes this. -
@forteller ah, looks interesting, not really open, designs only on request, but we'll certainly contact them, thanks for the pointer

hello @jrobertson how are you today?

hello @jrobertson how are you today?
-
@drobertson still feeling a bit tired for some reason, but apart from that not too bad.
-
@qihardware I am not suggesting a complete cerebral disconnect, I am just moving the focus i litte bit.
-
@qihardware not to be a smartass but isnt it better than a piece of hw that can be controlled, located, reset etc. that *doesnt* run !linux?
-
@thisisabore sure, far far better, yet i am debating whether better is good enough in this case ... !linux
-
@mjjzf it has to start somewhere and reflashable devices are a very good start,am thinking about the next step+how to overcome the hurdles
-
@qihardware Issue with hardware is that the otherwise low barrier to entry making participation in !FreeSoftware easy doesn't apply to HW.
-
@drobertson can you give me a ruby example related to build xml?
-
@jroverflow try ... Build XML in Ruby http://snippets.dzone.com/posts/show/7728
