there is a lot of wealth behind #copyleft failing. it is scary to business as usual folks. http://ur1.ca/6q2l5

On the continuing decline of the GPL http://bit.ly/rME7MI Updating our most popular CAOS blog post of the year.

Good point. It is *more* permissive though ;-) Taking it out doesn't impact the overall trend significantly
-
@fontana,I see no data supporting "developer culture shift" conclusion & it doesn't seem statistical rigor is used in any of these "studies"
-
@fontana I agree with this. Specifically, it reflects the increasing significance of the Python and Ruby communities, among others.

@copiesofcopies I think you hit the nail on the head, and furthermore that those communities are "sharing" libraries and not applications

I think what we're seeing is that permissive licenses are just great for libraries, and libraries are currently thriving
-
Now we need to enter the next area of webdev, get hackers to build real web *applications*, and [A]GPL makes a lot more sense there
-
But for the most part, this isn't happening yet, and I think this is part of the reason we're seeing for copyleft rot
-
In a certain sense, "open source succeeded"; "share the non-critical parts of your business" is the default now, but it *isn't enough*

But software freedom hasn't won, and now we need web *applications*! And copyleft will make a lot more sense there.

@cwebber: it's galling how smug people are over this. Github's recent self-congratulatory post was a prime example of it.
-
@cwebber: how do you mean "copyleft rot"?
-
@robmyers yes that post definitely boiled my blood a bit
-
I mean the decreasing use of copyleft for new projects, which I mean: not declining amount of FOSS, but higher libraries over applications
-
I considered writing a pro-free-software post with a troll title being "Open Source Won" (and the subtitle "but that's not enough")
-
These days, developers are mostly free, and end users are not.

Thank God. The almost-militant left-wing leanings of #GPL scared me away.
-
@fontana your contributions still welcome!
-
@cwebber: [citation needed] - see the article in the latest FSF bulletin. But yes Android and others using the Apache licence are fail IMO
-
It isn't "fail". But strategically suboptimal, I think yes.
-
Maybe it's time for me to write my "field guide to copyleft [supporters/]opponents" blogpost I've had in mid-draft form

I have one of those sorta, but it's about regulatory theory, if i'm engaging in puffery.
-
Also big, healthy jquery and Apache communities.
-
I agree with @cwebber's comments in this thread. I've read the whole thing & I pretty much have nothing to add to what he's said here. :)
-
is this because they care for themselves and not their fellow man? or do they fail to see the possible downsides? or?
-
Free licenses are not enough unless you have the ability and resources to successfully fork. #necessarybutnotsufficient
