"things that bring all the classes and cultures in a community together" http://gondwanaland.com/mlog/2011/12/30/prosports-lie/ !oakland

If the Stadium Complex were better located, adjacent business districts would benefit. The current location is a 'small business' desert.
-
Also, much like a theatre or museum, an arena can form the hub of a cultural district.

@zoowar can form a hub/benefit nearby, but still always net drain, and more egregious transfer to superwealthy than a theatre or museum

Redevelopment in any form is corrupt. Season 3 of The Wire portrays this effectively and enjoyably http://ur1.ca/74qg8

@zoowar I cheer the elimination of redevelopment agencies, which are indeed giant scam funnels.
-
Balancing public/private interest is difficult. Without redevelopment agencies, who would advocate for the public? Certainly not the market.
-
@zoowar RDAs as advocates for the public interest? That's a good one. Case studies in thinly cloaking pvt interest, abusing public.
Greg Grossmeier and Rob Myers like this. -
RDAs are nominated/appointed by elected officials. Informed participation in this process is how we assert our interest.
-
@zoowar weakest form of democratic legitimacy, true of ~all gov does in demo. Not argument for RDAs, merely that they aren't totalitarian.
-
I don't hear you suggesting a less flawed process? SF RDA worked for SoMa which use to be skid row. SJ RDA perpetually fails.
-
@zoowar I'm no expert, but'd start with however [re]development happens outside declared dev areas now & prior to ~1950…
-
@zoowar …I like SFMoMA, YBCA, but without knowing lots more can't count as success. Pyramids look nice also. Cheap housing good for art too.
-
@zoowar don't agree w/100% but re post-RDA near me http://emeryvilletattler.blogspot.com/2012/01/oportunity-lay-in-redevelopment-ashes.html

Wasn't alive back then, but that was when banks use to lend to the community 'It's a Wonderful Life' style.
