    given apple's staggering profits, it seems unfair that none (or little) of it goes to support the open source software they rely on

      #Apple doesn't *want* to rely on open source; the company has made that clear.

      @mcnalu this is the problem with the BSD license compared to the GPL license.

      @laurelrusswurm yes, quite ironic

      @sandersch indeed, without exception all my developer friends who formerly used linux (ubuntu) are apple'd up now and shun gpl for bsd

      @mcnalu that is sad.

      @laurelrusswurm @Mcnalu I have never been able to understand the BSD licence, it just seems to attract selfish sorts. (Apple/Tivo)

      @satipera I think the idea is allow all freedom... including freedom to restrict. the gpl freedom is restricted - cant make it unfree

      @laurelrusswurm This must have implications for the rate of development of the code.

      @laurelrusswurm I do not understand the process but just thought that if people are taking without giving back it must slow things down.

      I think the main reason why they chose !FreeBSD as a base was the license. They had never any intent of giving back to open source.

      @navigium yes, that's true. I was wondering whether the gpl has done much better for linux, eg has it benefited from android's success?

      @navigium if i recall correctly the tcp stack in windows is also from bsd origin for same reason, for me bsd license promotes nothing good.

      I think #Linux gets a lot more back from people and corporations using it than #FreeBSD. But that's just a feeling.

      @navigium CUPS being the exception?

    • mcnalu mcnalu Beni

      @navigium I think so too, but to my point about apple - are contributors to linux getting any of android's profit back from htc, samsung etc

      How's that an exception? CUPS is under GPL except for the part that Apple doesn't want to give back to the community.

      I'm not sure how much developing is done by handset producers. So there isn't much to give back.

    • mcnalu mcnalu Beni

      @navigium that's another important point, but I was refer to money profits

      about 4 months ago
    • Harley Laue Harley Laue The FreeBSD Project , Beni

      @navigium Apple owns the cups source code, they could discontinue support for the GPL version (but haven't)

    • Beni Beni

      I think money-wise there are always freeloaders around. The only way to avoid that is to use a non-commercial license.

      Probably because they like it when people work for them for free. If they discontinued it, they risk a fork of CUPS.
