I am frequently amazed that people who consider themselves international business people are confused by complex wire transfer instructions.

@bkuhn sometimes confusion is a masquerade for wisdom and getting things done their way, not yours.

@bkuhn I'm occasionally amazed by !freesoftware totalists who don't reject banking, all other commerce run on proprietary sw #maybetroll

@bkuhn I know the philosophical out. I guess there aren't really any !freesoftware totalists.
-
@mlinksva oh, that is another good point for my perpetually in-draft post on banking/loans.
-
@esdaniel, if you mean "my way" as in "the way USA banks make us do it", then I agree with the sentiment. But I have no ability to fix that.
-
@mlinksva, I avoid #ATM's, FWIW, but I don't think buying a general service from someone who chooses proprietary software backend is immoral

Seriously, I get jammed up on wire transfers every single time. It's like nobody ever did it before.
-
I've been using Bitcoin instead of wire transfers, for USA<->UK and USA<->Canada. Refreshingly easy. (But yeah, forex risk...)
-
Yeah, I don't think people who can't handle a wire transfer should consider Bitcoin transfer right now.
-
Here I'd be a complete conspirationist ... broken wire transfers mean more credit cards; in Europe we WT work and no credit cards (almost).
-
The “Bitcoin transfer” step is dead simple: you cut and paste a "Bitcoin address", enter an amount, click a button, and wait an hour or two.
-
The hard part about using Bitcoin right now is making a wire transfer to someone to buy Bitcoin in the first place.
-
Yeah, I had to get a friend in the country open an account and have that friend do the wire transfer because the company wouldn't wire.
-
@bkuhn I'm impressed with your avoidance of ATMs but think the "own computing" as ethical boundary problematic.
-
@fontana as general matter, suspect lots of truth there: opinion commitments constrained and reinforced by social circles and their rituals
-
@bkuhn who would use wire transfers anymore anyway? costly, exposes the receiver to fraud. ACH is cheaper/better.
-
@mlinksva, using proprietary sw isn't murder. It's moral equivalent of failing to ♻. I don't require service providers are perfect on that.
-
@bkuhn I am glad in NL we have Linux sw for taxes.
-
@parlementum, ACH is still a USA-only system, AFAICT. If you operate internationally, you need wire transfers to send/receive money.
-
@bkuhn individual ♻ apt & gets to what is problematic about "own computing" ethics. tentatively I say too individualistic, won't save world.
-
@mlinksva,I'll die in a world w/ proprietary software rampant no matter what I do. I'm just carrying an individual torch for next generation
-
Torches are a cool thing. They can light your path, and set fire to your obstacles.
-
@fontana, I meant a different kind of service provider in that context: out-sourcing type, not online service providers.
-
@bkuhn Nice leadership. Is your next dent going to suggest what time we should all pack up and go home?
-
@satipera, we should keep working toward software freedom, though we may not reach it in our lifetimes. Rose-colored glasses are silly.
-
@bkuhn Yes.I would just ask you to remember That your unguarded sayings are more important than ours. #FLOSS

@satipera we live in a meritocracy! Let the best unguarded statements rise to the top! Also, LIVE FREE OR DIE!
-
@douglasawh dont bring that new hampshire motto in, after working 2 campaigns there i opt for the latter option :)
-
@fontana not much can be said about that future, but I'd expect the collective action problems to be similar.
-
You mean the belastingsdienst has software for linux? I never knew that
-
I still don't get it. Could you do a screencast of yourself sending, say, 10 BTC to 1Dns6cwcYR1Uk42EqfyucVAy9ydGmCVqiL …
-
http://btc.to/38p /cc @zooko
-
Perhaps I should explain that I'm using hosted services to hold and transfer the Bitcoin, so this is all on a web page.
-
Will try! Making screencasts is not something that I already know how to do...
-
Oh, you were kidding, right?
-
How do wire transfers expose the received to fraud?
-
Yes. But if you'd like to demo wiring me money and sending me BTC to see which is easier, I won't complain.
-
You should write a humor column in an internet zine.
-
@zooko because you are providing your acct number and ABA number to strangers. ACH systems can include fraud protections
-
… though, #BoA having problems might not be so bad if BoA itself wasn't #Too-Big-to-FIX.
