David Beckham kicked out of soccer match for arguing calls... a kids soccer match fb.me/M1MWtTL3
-
@mrsxoke probs more about the role model issue, undermining the ref sets the wrong message
-
@thistleweb I would agree
-
@mrsxoke generally Becks is a very good role model, methinks it was a mountain out of a molehill, perhaps ref a bit too much of a jobsworth
-
@thistleweb That isn't unheard of either, but kids also don't play at the same level as he is used to, and often times the rules are not
-
@mrsxoke strictly enforced depending on the age group. I remember when @minixoke played there were very few rules with e five and unders.
-
@thistleweb it was almost laughable, but I have to admit the kids had fun, learned the basics, and that was all that mattered that first yr
-
@mrsxoke in the UK we fail because we insist on lots of tests & rules, which saps all the fun out of it, it holds us back, Becks KNOWS this
-
@mrsxoke ALL the top sports countries, their kids play for FUN, they play to enjoy themselves, it's how they develop. Rules come later
-
@mrsxoke by that time, the players have engrained skills at all the basics & can apply them to the rules - they still WANT to play
-
.. noser.
-
@thistleweb Beckham seems to me to be a nice bloke living with a lack of privacy. If I have a problem with him it is for being PR brown ..
-
@thistleweb In fact he is a brown noser full stop.
-
@satipera him and his wife are a brand, it's what they do
-
@satipera there's a lot worse people living the rich celeb lifestyle
-
@thistleweb I stand by my previous statement he is a nice bloke.
-
@satipera Didn't he get sent over here?
-
@lstench he's good enough to play in europe, his family really love the LA lifestyle (close to Hollywood etc), they're not likely to move
-
@satipera all footballers build plans for when they retire, some manage, some commentate, some own buisnesses
-
@lstench When he went to the USA he was still in demand. He picked there. Unless he goes into management his job will be the same as ..
-
.. his wife's.
-
@lstench he has the right to buy a MLS franchise too
-
@thistleweb you're joshing right?
-
@satipera he's going to become a bad singer………?
-
@lstench :-) No, famous for being famous.
-
@satipera Oh why is she famous, not for the Spice thing I hope they were horrible a big joke.
-
@lstench You have to give it to her she did what anyone would do. By accident she found herself on the train to somewhere nice and did ..
-
@satipera perhaps someone should issue DMCA demands on peoples memories & all video evidence in advance
-
@lstench yep, she's a kareoke singer / dancing monkey with the Spice Girls, who managed to extend her 5mins of fame into a brand
-
.. not get off.
-
@thistleweb He was doing his job and getting paid. Do not forget that like most of us he has occasionally behaved like a prize twat not ..
-
.. a saint.
-
@thistleweb he has talent?
-
@satipera No I don't fault her for that. I fault the folks who actually bought the stuff allowing her to become famous.
-
@satipera No accounting for taste.
-
@lstench he does, is is one of the best footballers on the planet, although now winding down a bit, closer to retirement age
-
@lstench he had about 10yrs where the best clubs in the world were after his signature
-
@thistleweb Okay wasn't quite sure as I don't follow "football"
-
@thistleweb "Okay so he is good. Think he would have a chance in the Superbowl you know real football?", she says as she ducks.
-
.. hero worship?
-
@thistleweb Winding down? He will soon be 37 for a player of his position that is life support. He is a footballer why do you need to ..
-
@lstench lol, a few years back yes, he is very near retirement age
-
@satipera it's not about age, it's about fitness, if he's capable why retire? plenty players can still cut it, just not for 90mins every gam
-
@satipera either go to an easier league, become a bit part player or retire from playing, he's always looked after himself
-
@satipera I wasn't aware pointing out that he was in fact a damn good player was "hero worship" - admitting that fact != like or dislike
-
@satipera feel free to hate him for any reasons you like, it doesn't change the fact that he spent many years as a top player
-
@thistleweb You are not making sense I have already said he is a nice bloke.
-
@satipera you accuse me of hero worship when I point out he is more than just a celeb for nothing, he actually earned it
-
@thistleweb I never said he was a celeb for nothing I said his wife was and when he finishes playing football unless he does something ..
-
.. else he will be.
-
@lstench "real football" is a neanderthal game compared to soccer. And David Beckham was legend.
-
@laurelrusswurm funny I never heard of him until about a year ago he was on the cover of a mag at the grocer.
-
@laurelrusswurm Luckily you are far enough away from our war painted football fanatics not to hear.
-
@lstench The HS I attended outlawed football due to student death; I spent more than a decade watching my son play soccer ... no comparison
-
Highly recommended movie: "Bend It Like Beckham" (fabulous sport chick-flick ... probably on netflix even)
-
@laurelrusswurm he has a movie out? Can he act?
-
@laurelrusswurm My daughter want to play soccer--- I don't want to become a soccer mom.
-
@lstench he's not in it, it's a young woman in England inspired by him, he was known for free kicks, that's her dream
-
@lstench womens soccer in the US is a lot more advanced than many nations, it may not be a bad idea for her
-
@lstench well, if he is in it, it's a cameo....I haven't seen it
-
@lstench Soccer is the most fun team game to watch. And I think it may be most fun for kids.
-
@thistleweb I see I thought he was a movie star too.
-
@thistleweb I know I will cave in after we move.
-
@thistleweb Agreed they are streets ahead.
-
@laurelrusswurm it's also a great blend between tactics, pyhisical, stamina, invention, improv etc when done right
-
@lstench in the US it could be a good career for her if she's good enough
-
@lstench On a poster on female soccer player's room #noacting http://www.ur1.ca/80o47 (stars actresses from ER & Pirates of the Caribbean)
-
@lstench having said that, this year's womens soccer league in the US got cancelled over contract negotiation failures apparently
-
@thistleweb They just cancelled the league?
-
@lstench He's a legendary player. Like our Maurice "Rocket" Richard http://www.ur1.ca/80p79 or your Micky Mantle or Joe DiMaggio
-
@thistleweb always the money, never the love of the game. It ruined all the leagues this past year.
-
@satipera the season yes http://goo.gl/afHwH players are scrambling for non US teams to play for to stay fit this yr
-
@thistleweb Not good.
-
Most of that money comes from TV contracts. Without it, leagues/team owners/players would be more reasonable about financial demands.
-
I have a niece that is awesome she is in some special soccer league and travels across the country.
-
Still I wonder if the players play because they love the game or are they motivated by the money.
-
@lstench they play because they love playing, money will be a big part of deciding who to play for, including chances of medals, cups etc
-
@lstench at some point big money may win out over less money but better medal chances or vice versa, but they wanna play regularly
-
@lstench very few players will take big money to sit on the sidelines, sports people are at their peak for a limited time before decline
-
I get what you are saying but seems that they are willing to go without money (strike) too easily. They aren't struggling to begin with.
-
@lstench like anything, the top players won't be struggling but most of the rest will be average wage earners
-
Average? Above average even for the bench workers. The average salary is not above 100,000 dollars.
-
@lstench they are well paid, my point is that the ones you hear about tend to be vastly overpaid in comparison, exception rather than norm
-
@thistleweb It would be interesting to contact the PFA to see if they would give the average wage for a footballer.
-
@satipera wouldn't be as high as you'd think, most are lower league / non-league, only superstar names are on HUGE wages
-
@thistleweb I am with you on this it would be an interesting figure to know though.
-
got it. :D
-
@lstench imagine the career of the professional athlete ... most such careers last less than a decade, many body parts worn out then too.
-
@lstench professional sport is a business; the players are employees. I expect an aggregate of workers earnings will be a fraction of gross
-
@laurelrusswurm True.
-
@laurelrusswurm there is a thin line before it becomes greed.
-
@lstench and who's greedier, the players or the owners? An excellent sport film is one called The Rocket, about Maurice Richard...
-
@lstench about the greatest hockey player ever at a time players so poorly paid needed a day job, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460505/
-
Hey, I was just talking about greed. And rockets. #irony
-
@lstench to give you an idea of Maurice Richard;s legendary status: http://www.nfb.ca/film/sweater/
-
Rocket was Canadian legend from the badly paid period ... reduced to selling male hair dye post career #shameonus http://www.ur1.ca/815tt
-
@laurelrusswurm Well today that is certainly not true, most need a pay cut. The owners are just as greedy but their main concern is they
-
@laurelrusswurm don't want the players to make more than them. Players have very little overhead beyond an agent.
-
@lstench I admit to very little knowledge of today's pro sports (ref: Bull Durham)
-
