rdr @dragosr Wearing a Guy Fawkes mask could get you 5 years in jail in !Canada, under new proposed bill C-309 http://ur1.ca/874ut !CDNpoli
about a year ago from web- Kipngetich Ibrahim Ngeno and Jose R Rodriguez repeated this.
-
Well, it is only if wearing whilst commiting another offence. Still, makes me rething desire to come home. My country is broken.
-
Combine this with the online surveillance bill (C30) and copyright legislation bill (C11) and I fear you're right. #pc_majority #bad_idea
-
@1111aether Bill-309 criminalizes mask wearing to suppress protest. If gov't decides a halloween party=riot mask w/get you 5 yrs !CDNpoli
-
I know he's right.
-
@laurelrusswurm if carrying a mask is illegal, then everybody must show and express there feelings and thoughts 100%. Immediately. :)
-
@laurelrusswurm @111aether I’m not #Canadian, but ISTM that rioting is already a crime. Banning masks during “riots” is not necessary.
-
@1111aether How do you know the street you are on will become a riot? Plenty of bystanders were swept into #G20 & assaulted by cops !CDNpoli
-
@1111aether and meanwhile, #G20 cops removed their badge #s with impunity. !CDNpoli
-

-
@1111aether Masking will apply also to covering your face, so protecting yourself from teargas will get 5 years too !CDNpoli #G20report
-
@inscius # C-309 "while wearing a mask or other disguise to conceal their identity without lawful excuse is guilty of an indictable offence"
-
I wouldn't go quite that far. Canadian civilians are not routinely subject to military trials. Yet.
-
@lnxwalt Bill C-309 is called "Concealing Their Identity during Riots and Unlawful Assemblies Act" ... its"assemblies" they want to stop...
-
@laurelrusswurm But once they decide an assembly is unlawful, there are already legal remedies available, right?
-
Not that I support the bill, but, from a scan, aren't all the mask provosions conditional on having committed a distinct crime while masked?
-
@laurelrusswurm so burkas and large sunglasses would be offence...?
-
@vanden Perhaps I’m out of order commenting on your country’s politics, but doesn’t that mean mask law is unnecessary add-on penalty?
-
@vanden Not conditional on crime, but on assembly. Masking your face at an unlawful assembly or riot. C-309 http://ur1.ca/874ut !CDNpoli
-
@vanden Criminal code http://ur1.ca/87i8u states lawful assembly can become unlawful/riot, so peaceful protest will be suppressed. !CDNpoli
-
@lnxwalt If you are at a lawful assembly and someone yells at a cop, it can be upgraded to unlawful.
-
Not out of order; I am happy to opine on yours :-) I took spirit to akin to additional penalties 4 using gun in commision of another crime.
-
@laurelrusswurm but Canade is a cold climate country...? not like we don't have dumb and evil politicians here in Sweden. #globalcrap
-
"Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1) while wearing a mask" makes it clear that mere mask-wearing not covered. It is >
-
> still a bogus steaming piece of crap. But, mask offence language does require prior offence in order to apply.
-
@vanden Nonetheless !Canada's civilians can be subjected to plenty of bad treatment indeed. #juklianichim !freebyron
-
That doesn't worry. The language makes clear that "we originally assembled for a peacful purpose" no defence if purpose turned afterwards.
-
We are very much on the same side, there. 'Yet' was included out of sarcasm and despair.
-
Could you substantiate this claim, please? The language "will disturb the peace tumultuously" would not seem to cover yelling at a cop.
-
@vanden Except that attending an unlawful assembly or a riot *is* an offence under the criminal code. !CDNpoli #whykettlingallowed
-
@1111aether ah, but that was then; this is now, when our "law and order majority" are being challenged on #lawfulaccess #crimeomnibus &tc
-
@vanden funny, it seems we should be on the same side
-
My point was simply that you made it sound as though mere mask wearing in a gathering was being criminalized. As said, agree bill is crap.
-
Low bandwidth medium; I don't really follow your meaning, here.
-
@vanden Repression can and does happen because of overzealous interpretation of law.
-
@laurelrusswurm horrible. We had maybe something similar in Göteborg, Sweden, 2001 http://ur1.ca/87itm
-
@1111aether It could very easily be voted for by majority in backlash for pushback..."Some guy" would get the backlash rather than the party
-
Thanks. I'll look at it later. (Have to get back to formatting now. :)
-
I'm just tired of being attacked by you @vanden ... go troll somebody else.
-
@inscius There is too much of it happening.
-
@laurelrusswurm agree. A period of bigger changes. Hopefully it will come out better.
-
@1111aether Get going ... and me too :)
-
In all honesty, I cannot see anything trolling in this. I am open to possibility that I am wrong, but I have genuinely reflected.
-
Agreed. That is a problem with enforcement and implementation. The best of laws can be bent by evil wills.
-
@vanden You're not the first to dislike me, nor will you be the last. Just unfollow me and be done with it.
-
Chill out. I've said nothing to indicate I harbour such attitudes. I was honestly attempting to engage in convo on topic of mutual interest.
-
@vanden it happens in every conversation. Life is too short.
-
@vanden @laurelrusswurm Yea, I've followed this exchange all day. I don't see where the animosity is. Come back tomorrow with fresh eyes. ;)
-
@nybill Not just this, not this issue, everything UI say. I don't think Vanden's a troll to anyone but me. Personality clash. #suchislife
