@fontana wow people are *still* complaining about it!?
-
I don't have the remote backup tool working yet. I may not have time. Sad that @fontana gives arbitrary deadline. Can someone else help!?!?
-
@bkuhn you just want to crawl all his posts? I can probably do that pretty easy

@bkuhn I might have some time this weekend, have you published a prototype?

@bkuhn I'm crawling now. Also, it's been suggested to me that sngpl.ma/u2H likely has a number of the more recent ones that… sngpl.ma/t4GT1
-
@fontana Have you tried @samatjain@identi.ca 's backup tool yet?
-
I think I remember the Giuliani line, but I swear there was another one...
-
@fontana, Pls tell me what the point would there is to answer your (otherwise interesting) questions here. You'll just delete context later.
-
I'm Michael Moore &/or George Bailey of !FreeSoftware. Can't imagine any other analogy that fits…Is @greve still JamesBond of Free Software?
-
@fontana Please refrain from deleting everything; I've been writing an article for the past 6 months & it's filled with links to your dents…
-
@fontana I should've mentioned it's in French :-) been heavily linking to conversations, your dents were a vital part but links still exist
-
@fontana That being said, not sure I get your point: what's wrong with leaving your account untouched? (e.g. for archival purposes)
-
@fontana you're not going to write that. It really bugs me when people say they're "going" to write code. Writing code fits Yoda's philsophy
-
@bkuhn "there is no try...catch, only do...while" #yodaprogramsinc
-
I totally have the #MASH theme stuck in my head now.
-
Use the force?
-
@kaz is the jaywalker. @bkuhn is the Michael Moore of #freesoftware. I can't remember the name/nick of the poor man's Jono Bacon though...
-
@eximious I'm guessing "Do or do not. There is no 'try'."
-
Well, that certainly makes more sense than "Size matters not. "
-
@bkuhn "get on with" could imply code has been written. repository? or is it going-to-open-source-(v.)-going-to-write #doublevapor
-
@fontana I think you mean #TaxiDriver.
-
TV version. #MASH was on 3-4 times a day for most of my childhood.
-
@fontana it breaks many pages, but you you can take or leave them as you please
-
@fontana, I perfectly caught #MASH reference & thought it was good, but your insistence on deleting our past communications is !disturbing
-
The final countdown?
-
@fontana have you written any blog posts on why you favor #Denticide? #YouSoundLikeADentist
-
@fontana one gets to wonder what the point is of sabotaging threading and burning history...
-
@fontana I thought that, after publishing under a license that permits sharing and twisting, you'd be better off keeping notes intact
-
this thread has me listening to every possible permutation of #suicideispainless, thanks for the wasted hours :)
-
@fontana Your performance art counter is skipping?
-
@fontana I'm glad you have a right to be forgotten. I hope @bkuhn and others respect that. Folks, if you see thread errors, let me know.
Charles Roth likes this. -
@fontana you may not be in the Identiverse but you will not be forgotten.
-
@fontana ok, good to know. You're just removing old dents then.
-
I don't know what this forgetting model is. Did @fontana ever mention it? CC-BY permission granted and dents exist in federated instances
-
OK. "You have the right to delete the stuff you published to identi.ca".
-
@fontana that all said, I do take the drama very personally. I know it's a big joke to you, but it's a big big deal to me.
-
I take it more personally that you're driving @bkuhn into conniptions
-
@fontana,clearly you don't want them public anymore. You've not told me the reason, but as your friend I respect your wishes despite license.
-
@fontana so are you trying to just make a point by sabotaging it? or is this a “why jump off the bridge?” “because I can” argument?
-
@fontana why do you bring PHP into the conversation with me, BTW?
-
@fontana if statusnet really gave you the right to delete notices, the protocol should mandate deletion across instances
-
@fontana, it may seem that way, but it is not in conflict.
-
offf off yes http://www.oyunsoft.org :)
-
I think there's a good question about whether to insert [deleted] or something similar into conversations where something's gone missing.
-
Because sometimes just the fact that you said something *at all* is embarrassing.
-
It's a pretty fundamental question; do social updates work like email (can't delete remotely) or like Web publishing (can).
Mikael likes this. -
Could show [deleted] with no user info whatsoever.
-
Expecting to revoke anything once it has been sent to the internet is silly and leads to frustration.
Jason Riedy and rozzin's identicat ghost like this. -
@evan IMHO once the data reaches a server that's not under one's own control, removing one's own copy is pointless
-
@evan given federation, even if there were provisions to remove remotely, peers might refuse to comply => it's like email
-
There's no reason we couldn't send out "deleted" notifications over #fsw.
-
@lxoliva practically spreaking there's no way to enforce that, I know I would disable it on my instance if there were such a feature.
-
Maybe. I think communities where deleting one's own mistaken messages are much more civil. http://meatballwiki.org/wiki/ForgiveAndForget

@evan I suspect it will work as well as cancellations do over Usenet.
-
You realize yogurt is milk that has gone bad, right? :) Of course if it's got sugar and fruit in it, that's another story.
-
I would guess that this reply was for me; and yeah, but only sufficiently bad. :D
-
Oh. oops. Reply fail. But kind of relevant.
-
@evan deleting mistaken messages is useful, but I'd set a short timeout to delete after post, and keep the message if there are replies
-
@evan other than that, having entries removed from my friends' timeline feels like having 1984 removed from my e-reader :-( /cc @fontana

Next @fontana talk to be "The decline of the #FranklinStreetStatement, and what to do about it" #TNAT

@fontana free network svcs so far behind that licenses, let alone small amount of abuse by impostors, not a factor. cannot blame AGPL.
Christopher Allan Webber likes this. -
@fontana there is a version by Marilyn Manson apparently? #DenticideIsPainless
-
@fontana That is hard to wrap mind around for most ppl. Federated sites are equals, even if some smaller than others.
-
@fontana "proprietary relicensor pwned the AGPL" -> What was that? I missed this episode.
-
@evan Big problem is sending out a redacted message means anyone who hasn't received the memo will look extra hard at it.
-
I cannot make that commitment, obviously.
-
@evan lame!
-
If I RD something that someone else has published, and they delete the original, that shouldn't have the right to alter/delete MY posting.
-
@fontana re. linkrot, I usually rely on archive.org but identica doesn't seem to have been archived for the past 2 years. (I understand why)
-
@fontana, I've already told you that I won't answer your questions here, b/c of your deletionist tendencies. Sorry.
-

being a go-between @evan ?
-
@bkuhn this makes me extremely sad :'( #DefinitelyNotATroll
-
@lxoliva I would make an auto-repeater a feature request, but that would be the single most annoying thing ever...
-
Just set up a federated instance and subscribe to the users. Instant backup. (going forward)
-
@fontana your detachment from existing posts surely makes your move easier than mine :-)
-
@nds actually troll.status.net would be better for the #nat tag

-
@fontana it's part of my memory you're deleting. whose ethics is that?
-
♻ @lxoliva: this is a test. I'll delete it after posting a followup
-
eeek, this RD seems to have been completely omitted from the thread once I deleted its parent, though in context still points to same thread
-
@fontana while relying on him to have your dents removed isn't?
-
@fontana it's pretty easy for me to create an account and have it repeat all of those messages. must I, really? wanna pick its name?
-
@fontana anyhow, I now have a copy of all of your remaining notices (2674 of them) in xml format, including their ids
-
@fontana not for this length of time! unsurprisingly, you have more interesting things to say :)
-
Guns don't kill context, @fontana kills context.

Yes. I'm a conversational front man.

@fontana Yes, though I can't help reading 'service' with scare quotes :-) Nonetheless, it isn't doing it quietly; predicts more response.
-
@fontana, I'm not opposed to interacting with you via our own statusnet instances. I need to find some time to do this setup, though.

@fontana I have to say, the whole situation does not exactly confer sainthood on anyone involved ;)
-
@diablomarcus Yet, I feel pretty good about having introduced the #denticide tag. ;-)
-
Don't forget some people opt to receive email notification for @-replies, meaning the archive is bigger still.
-
got it working in lighttpd as well, don't remember why I moved back to apache.

come on
