@1111aether Good to see. I know several Ubuntu folk - like many, !Ubuntu was my intro to free software .. good to see response
about a year ago from web-
@1111aether Did you link the post you intended? I see a long bit of proselytizing, but not anything that falls under your description.
-
@1111aether That is not to deny that the phenomena you dent about occurs. It does, and all too often. That's why I went to look.
-
@1111aether > to be a fair move: there needs to be an argument made (may be makeable) as to why one source of probable offence should be >
-
@1111aether I got as far as seeing it was a long thread, and didn't look at much of it. FWIW, I did take the original invocation of Bible >
-
@1111aether > yet others not. Also, in the context, discussion of porn not gratuitous. Akin to discussing what a Library ought carry.
-
@1111aether I mean to say that there's an issue 2B confronted (should this sw be included) & that needs discussion to be rationally decided.
-
Don't bite me! Not just porn, but most 'girl culture' promotes objectification of women.
-
@1111aether Argh. #slowdentica makes a hard to have by dent convo nearly impossible. Please accept I'm denting in good faith.
-
@1111aether At least part of that is surely due to significant overlap in the hacker and anti-censorship crowds. But, as said, read little.
-
@1111aether "lp"? Not sure re:Coc. Ubuntu governance not my thing :-)
-
@1111aether I think Porn & Proselytising both inappropriate http://identi.ca/notice/91124441 /cc @flyingsquirrel @ubuntuwaterloo !ubuntuca
-
@1111aether I do still think the discussion of porn in the context of "should we include this app" not gratuitous but part of the task.
-
@1111aether Also, complicated as yours not the only rational attitude to porn. (Much diversity in views even within feminist thought.)
-
@1111aether FWIW, I wouldn't include it, but wouldn't exclude religious apps and feel uncomfortable in ability to justify difference.
-
omg, what a horrible thread!
-
Attack all the villains!
-
At least porn is rational.
-
@r7 anarchism?
-
@douglasawh if you're on debian do aptitude show anarchism | it's #anarchistfaq in fact
-
@laurelrusswurm surely there is a way to section them off into a "lifestyle" category
-
@1111aether sounds like the UK TBH
-
@r7 you've given me a new reason to try debian :)
-
@laurelrusswurm since you're asking my opinion, I take a dim view of censorship in general.
-
As for "sexual harassment," I don't see a CoC violation, but if there's a genuine concern, please email the CC: http://is.gd/mtRXnS
-
@flyingsquirrel I share your view of censorship, but fail to understand how either Porn & Proselytising appropriate for unity design list
-
I thought the #ubuntu porn lens was a joke when I first saw the news
-
@tekk I have no idea what that is
-
A while ago ubuntu had an article on their "adult lens" which was basically a way to search porn straight from unity. I…
-
Yeah, definitely off-topic. Tho the original post may have been relevant if they'd stuck to "get crap off the lens" vs ranting about porn.
-
@1111aether I'm not a member of that list, and have tried to follow the thread you provided but it was a bit confusing.
-
@1111aether i don't think anyone should be subjected to either porn or proselytising in the workplace (outside the appropriate industries)
-
No offense but I'm hoping that the sender of that mail wasn't serious, so many factual errors...
-
@flyingsquirrel Thanks.
-
big example being that the US was in fact not built on a christian system, most of the big founders were deists(origina…
-
@tekk like a search feature?
-
@flyingsquirrel I don't know what the lens is since I opted out of unity and use classic... is it a search bar for porn?
-
A lens is basically a dedicated ui for something. Youtube lens searches/plays youtube videos, search lens searches goog…
-
Unity shows you a bunch of random apps when you open up the dash (the dash has lenses; don't worry about it). Most of them are usually junk.
-
@douglasawh what I was thinking ... adults should be able to decide for themselves, but not be inflicting on others not so inclined
-
It doesn't look good. There's a case to be made for removing the random apps. And you probably shouldn't see PornView unless you type "porn"
-
@flyingsquirrel do you mean the screen of random menu-like 5 across buttons on a black bg thing?
-
A better argument should be "that list should be curated." PornView shouldn't be shown not because it's porn, but because it's junk.
laurelrusswurm likes this. -
I'd totally switch to Unity if they had that feature. #halfkidding
-
wait what, this thread isn't even about a porn lens, it's about PORNVIEW, which is just an average image viewer!
-
@flyingsquirrel I'm inclined to agree anything auto s/b rated "family" (making hot button subjects like porn, violence & religion opt-in)
-
Yeah, like this: http://is.gd/4aFjXV We're talking about the "apps available for download" at the bottom.
-
they've had it since 11.10 iirc. at least my friends and I were mocking it around then(all dislike ubuntu, much prefer …
-
For the up for download area it'd make sense to go with the whitelist, or at least an automated version. As the person …
-
This is a mostly a reasonable place, @1111aether What @flyingsquirrel says: http://identi.ca/notice/91141876 is pretty much what I think
-
@flyingsquirrel that lens thing was one of the things i didn't like about unity; took too much space ineffectively
-
agh, I need to write a blog post pointing out all of ryan's factual errors wrt christianity and US tomorrow, going to a…
-
@tekk like the back room in the video store. The one where small kids aren't allowed
-
*shrug*, à chacun son goût. I like it mostly for the type-to-search stuff. Tho even there, it can be improved. It's still new.
-
@flyingsquirrel it never seemed to guess right; then too I get annoyed when software assume it knows what i want, tells me what i'm spelling
-
@tekk I can see large explicit icons being offensive
-
yeah. Iirc adult lens is kept in a separate repo so that you can't randomly wander into it. There are no porn apps in u…
-
@tekk so pornview isn't really?
-
Not unless you explicitly open porn up in it. The icon itself is just a blonde woman's face on a pink background, so no offense there.
-
Wait, so it's real? Shit. Who made it? I must tell them how awesome they are.
-
sorry, orange bg. http://ur1.ca/8dc1o <= totally safe for work screenshot, used some gnome icons since I don't have an…
-
http://tekk.com.ar/statusnet/url/852 wrote it, apparently. Who would've known that some ridiculous news story would be useful to be able to recall..
-
@laurelrusswurm a lens is just like a filter of certain common items, people can make their own lenses, like search terms including porn
-
@laurelrusswurm it's just a mode that doesn't index your actions to be included in regular searches, like incognito mode in a browser
-
@laurelrusswurm the obvious use case is for porn on a family PC, that you don't want "recent documents, recent browse history etc to show
-
@laurelrusswurm it also can be set not to index certain folders, again, the obvious use case is porn; hence the name porn mode
-
I agree to the “exclude the bible” answer. In my opinion the bible is offensive and just as dehumanizing as some porn - and more than some.
-
Why not just marking stuff per age group? Mature and adult as cathegories should be enough. An image viewer would still be neither.
-
Sidenote: pornview is actually in !gentoo portage, too. But hammers the disk quite badly. Disk and CPU…
-
Just read the followups. Marking per age group seems to be the solution already chosen before that discussion.
-
@r7 First, discussion was about packages presented in easy to find way, not about packs in repos. In that context, good arg for no porn.
-
@r7 Third, provided pack of decent quality, it would outrage me were someone to argue for repo removal. Not just b/c have symp with arach.
-
@r7 Second, not sure anarachism pack belongs in that context, either. Not looked; how's the FAQ quality? I fear it might be cringe-worthy.
-
the bible *is* porn in some places, or at least as close as they could get. See ezekiel 23:20 for a quick example.
-
@1111aether http://ur1.ca/8czh0 FUD "Porn View", "orchestrate .. damnation of the enemy's .. key [Microsoft] evangelism" http://ur1.ca/3ia92
-
@1111aether The email made the point clearly. I opted to let it percolate, etc., before reply. But, it was well-expressed (and appreciated).
-
@1111aether Not a question of your sucking, but one of the use of a medium not designed for the purpose. BTW way to start a monster thread!
-
A link to this email would have spawned much less controversies. Why did you link to the religious nutcrack? → http://ur1.ca/8di1e
-
Though I would just have answered: The answer was needlessly aggressive, but I agree with the content. You hit the censorship button.
-
@1111aether :)
-
@1111aether glad you got it sorted.
-
What? You are posting a Christians insane ramblings on Identica? and call it "being sexually harassed" when no one cares? *facepalm*
-
it is almost like this woman that TTA talks about: http://ur1.ca/8ebf3 .
