@ciarang I like to tell people they've misspelt "loll". They never understand, but it amuses me nonetheless.
Tuesday, 24-Feb-09 22:58:55 UTC from xmpp-
@hz Hmmm... I don't have "conference" configured in DNS. If it works for me shouldn't it work for you? I'll make the change in DNS anyway.
-
@damien Psi tells me "Error: remote server not found" for all subdomains of linuxnijas.tv when browsing the services
-
@bavatar what does ping tell you? could it be a DNS problem?
-
@bavatar Double check your spelling. "linuxninjas.tv" NOTE: I just added conference.linuxninjas.tv as an SRV record. I hope it works.
-
$ ping conference.linuxninjas.tv ping: unknown host conference.linuxninjas.tv @damien
-
@bavatar I'm not sure you can do that. It's an SRV record. In any case you will have to wait for about an hour for DNS to catch up.
-
@bavatar same result here - DNS propblem or new (sub)domain not propagated yet?
-
@marjoleink it seems so @damien just added the subdomain to the SRV record
-
@bavatar I see he says it can take an hour - but DNS can actually take up to 72 hours to propagate worldwide
-
@marjoleink I configured my DNS TTL for 30 minutes. You have to wait fro the slave servers to check.
-
@marjoleink It's a combination of TTL, Slave servers, and your DNS server. They all need to update their info.
-
@ciarang heh. I'm not picky.
-
@dwd I know a sleek bug you could fix :)
-
@ciarang There's always the "Were you born in a barn?" line. That never gets old. Never, I tell you.
-
@kev We know a song about that, don't we?
-
@ciarang I think you'll find that's "openmicroscrollback".
-
@ciarang Especially when you don't even keep goats.
-
@ciarang How long is his left index finger?
-
@dwd Approx 0.00005 furlongs (obscure units of measurement are apparently also obligatory)
-
@ciarang Really? I'd have thought more like two third of an arc-second of the earth's curvature.
-
@ciarang yes I just subscribed to that - just wondering why @changeloglaconica stopped
-
@marjoleink I wondered that, but couldn't figure out who had been running it
-
@ciarang Use Opterons with RAID, honestly. Keeps my feet toasty-warm.
-
@ciarang Happy birthday then, dude! :)
-
@ciarang I think the third paragraph is better than calling it a lame duck, too.
-
@dwd Ah, so it's not a lame duck, but a bird nicknamed the "stinker"
-
@ciarang Exactly, and it's "very susceptible to disturbance".
-
@ciarang Are you perchance referring to a "journalist" who can't find the shift key?
-
@ciarang Oddly enough, I believe that's still under copyright, and actively protected.
-
@dwd Bah. Unless someone is prepared to actively sell something, I am not interested in their copyright.
-
@ciarang A quick scout about suggests that http://www.amigaforever.com/ will sell it, at least as part of a CDROM package.
-
@dwd Ah, thanks, but what I specifically need is a bootable floppy version (which I do already own, but is no longer functional)
-
@ciarang I'm glad it's not only me who finds that aspect of conference calls amusing :)
-
@ciarang You're forgetting the obvious question... which country did it come from?
-
@ciarang Have to agree - the story seems quite good, and I found myself wondering if it was available without the annoying map overlay.
-
@ciarang Have to agree - the story seems quite good, and I found myself wondering if it was available without the annoying map overlay.
-
@dwd You can say that again
-
@ciarang Reminds me, my son's reading book contained a picture of a "computer" - a Spectrum+. He was astounded when I pulled one off a shelf
-
@ciarang If you need one, here's a secure logout: https://secure.gsi.strath.ac.uk/secure/logout.html
-
@dwd It's even telling you why you should log out, after you've already tried to do so!?
-
@ciarang Actually, the login screen is also stupendous, on so many levels: https://secure.gsi.strath.ac.uk/secure/
-
Hmm - do Niall Quinn and David O'Leary have any history and common links (Arsenal). O'Leary for Sunderland ? @ciarang
-
@ciarang If you could, please. O'Leary is currently 9/1 so a wager could generate some extra Xmas income. DM me so 30,000 don't see it :-)
-
Steve Maclaren 7/1 to be next Sunderland manager. WTF ? I would love to hear him do the Geordie accent though (like his Dutch).
-
@andyc At 9/1 it's worth fixing a gps tracker to his car or getting the cleaner to go through the call log on his phone - leave it with me
-
Got vbox and bridged networking fully working thanks to @ciarang.
-
@ciarang I'm sorry, I couldn't understand that, you spelt at least three words correctly.
-
@ciarang I thought that particular storm in a teacup has blown over?
-
@dwd Dunno, but but they insisted on a reason. I don't think there's a time limit on how long I can hold a grudge about it though is there?
-
@dwd In fact, I was upset that they weren't involved in this wikipedia censoring malarchy, because I was looking forward to being outraged
-
@ciarang You can't be outraged unless you live in the south-east and read the Daily Mail, though.
-
@ciarang Then you get to change your name, and sign things "Outraged of Hemel-Hempstead".
-
@ciarang: Yeah I know, I've resisted Twitter for a long time but it seems like saying "I don't have an email address" to some people
-
@ciarang: I'll be using Identica to post through to Twitter so people can follow me there but having a different nick is awkward
Evan Prodromou likes this. -
@dantheman I would love to act all holier-than-thou about it, but I have a twitter account so I can't
-
@dantheman friends who won't FOSS for you perhaps deserve reconsideration of their friend status ;)
-
@sleepynate: It's not about friends more about business contacts really, I can't afford not to be in contact with some people
-
@dantheman would you go back to windows because all your friends are using it though ?
-
@mark: Well I take you point but this is about making a living and how many FOSS people use Windows to put food on the table? Same thing
-
@mark: I'm not saying it's right but being able to promote myself to the largest audience by feeding my posts through dosn't seem a big thin
-
@dantheman I feel you pain, same reason I have to keep an msn account up..
-
@bugabundo: Yes that would be great, I just need a way for people to see what I'm doing over there as it seems they don't care otherwise
-
Owe WP 2.7 and @ciarang an apology. You can drag'n'drop elements on the WP 2.7 dashboard. In fact, just displaying 'QuickPress' is nice.
-
@ciarang Unplug the speakers.
-
System->Admin->Login Window->Accessibility is the answer, thanks @dwd
-
@ciarang: Nice! That's good to hear, I'm waiting on Drupal to make auto upgrading a lot easier too
-
@ciarang any questions I maybe able to help you with? -Giannii
-
@ciarang Only if it were sent back, surely?
-
@ciarang Talking to myself, or maybe testing something, who can tell?
-
@disqus Spammer building a profile ? http://disqus.com/people/katieduffs.
-
@michaeltwofish how can you *not* build a profile when you want to comment (for whatever reason) and disqus is the only option to do so?
-
@michaeltwofish I'd like to know how to comment via disqus and *avoid* building a profile - cause I don't want one!
-
@marjoleink I'm not sure I understand. Read the posts and comments; this is a spammer, the comments make no sense.
-
@marjoleink And if you don't want to build a profile, just don't sign in, or make up a pseudonym.
-
@michaeltwofish I never signed in but saw a popup once of two comments of mine no different blogs - that smells like a profile to me
-
@michaeltwofish I checked out the profile, it kinda looks like spam but not entirely. I will keep an eye on that account. -Giannii
-
I meant @ciarang: Woa! Madness! :D
-
@ciarang When the postie turns up, say to your wife "You'd never believe how long I've been waiting for this".
-
@ciarang That's more than my car. OTOH, so were the new windscreen wipers I put on it a while back.
-
@ciarang And yes, I was working on that witty rejoinder for just over an hour, completely destroying any clichés about computer programmers.
-
@ciarang Ah, Harrogate. A little bit of the Home Counties in Yorkshire.
-
Looking at git cola this morning, since @ciarang mentioned it yesterday.
-
@ciarang Our git repo was converted from CVS a while back, goes back to 1989, and has all our software in it - big, long history.
-
@ciarang Wait, what useful thing are you accusing me of doing?
-
@dustin You pointed out that I had skimmed straight over the existence of GIT_AUTHOR_DATE (and GIT_COMMITTER_DATE) in the git documentation
-
@ciarang Ah yeah. I've been doing tons of repo fixups lately. I wrote an awful rebase-like tool a couple days ago. :)
-
@dustin http://stackoverflow.com/questions/367262/git-commit-setting-timestamps-into-the-future (though past, not future, is my requirement)
-
@dwd http://identi.ca/ciarang - the latest message seems to say "about a month ago from xmpp" :/
-
@zeen He does his own remote thing.
-
@dwd I'll attempt to add support for remote contacts soon.
-
@dwd I was working on safely reloadable modules for #Prosody http://prosody.im so I can reload identichat/etc more easily
-
So it sounds like I can say anything I like about @dwd and he won't hear me
-
@ciarang I won't tell :)
-
@ciarang Well, I'll hear you, but that never stops anyone else.
-
@ciarang Just a shame it's too late for Christmas, really.
-
@ciarang Chickens fly perfectly well, given sufficient fireworks.
-
@ciarang Hey, I just saw your git pull question come up in an RSS feed. What are you trying to do?
-
@dustin I want to be able to pull a specific range of commits from a remote repo, e.g. git pull http://yourrepo --range=467bf..cf677
-
@ciarang Doesn't quite work like that. You can fetch them all, and then selectively merge or cherry-pick.
-
@ciarang @flosoft will be so happy to hear you say that, assuming he's paying attention.
-
@dwd @ciarang It's not @flosoft but @florian :p
-
@ciarang not portable means not really useful for me, but I'll investigate Openfire - the idea of my own XMPP server appeals to me
-
@ciarang Yes, you could buy a bridge for that. And if you want to buy a bridge, I know the perfect one, and I'd be happy to help.
-
@ciarang On Identica you mean? Isn't he using it? I've seen him on Twitter a fair bit, I'll see what I can do ;)
-
@dantheman Looks like he got upset by having to press the tab key on an early version, and never came back
-
@dantheman Tell him I put up with a lot worse bugs than that in Mono without walking away in disgust ;)
-
@ciarang lol I'm not sure we'll be grilling him but I'll try, I'm amazed how many people have an Identica account but don't use it, very sad
-
Congratulations to @dantheman on his sustained and quite passable Aussie accent in the Jan 11 edition of #linuxoutlaws.
-
@ciarang I have a fascinating film all about a freshly painted wall if you'd rather something more interesting.
-
@dwd No thanks. "Watching paint dry sounds quite easy, but it can be stressful at times" - http://ur1.ca/1209
-
@ciarang "But it's still more interesting than reading the Daily Mail"?
-
@ciarang The first casualty of web is grammar.
-
@ciarang Not much, unfortunately.
-
@dwd Cool, looks like it posted twice, but we are getting there
-
@michaeltwofish Mate - I can only see me and thee. Wonder what happened to mystery member No. 2 ?
-
Interesting to see various reactions to the 0.7 UI. Most seem positive.
-
Now have git client - 0.7.0 is on again. Thanks @ciarang After all, it's not 'rocket science'.
-
@ciarang I hate it when other people cause me to make a bug, too.
-
@ciarang What you're saying is that by your diligence and hard work, you've located a bug in your QA systems. Great job.
-
@ciarang gTalk is "extended" XMPP, but also a demonstration why deploying ad-hoc, non-peer reviewed, protocol design is a bad idea.
-
@ciarang Excellent, was that just with a MAC code and all? I sent the code off, they're switching us today but no news so far
-
@dantheman Yep, the only problem was getting BT to cough up the MAC code in the first place.
-
@ciarang Sounds good, getting the MAC from Tiscali was refreshingly easy, the woman didn't even argue with me really, took 2 mins
-
@dantheman BT 'argued' for 5 days (pestered me with 2 phone calls & 10 emails). In the end, they were almost offering to pay me to stay.
-
@dantheman By contrast, with my new supplier (http://www.ukfsn.org/) I would just click the 'give me a MAC code' button on the site
-
@ciarang Wow BT really don't like to lose a customer, did you wake up next to a horses head as well? :D Sounds like you got a decent ISP now
-
@dantheman You back online? :)
-
@fabsh Nope, still waiting for them to take the connection off, they haven't started yet. I'm making the most of it till it dies :)
-
@dantheman Hehe.... OK! Best of luck! :)
-
@ciarang BT use Siebel for their CRM but go on, you can blame me for those customer retention communications :-)
-
In last night's Panorama, the staff at Ofcom were also using Siebel to manage customer complaints. They also have 4 TV monitors on each desk
-
@dantheman: your changing ISP Dan who you end up going for??
-
@jonn1 It's big old evil SKY i've moved to but to be fair it's bloody cheap, no fair usage policy so it's properly unlimited and twice speed
-
@ciarang You could lurk in the shadows all night with night vision googles and a handgun, like CLarkson claims to have done once.
-
@ciarang Then again, he did actually end up shooting his own chicken instead of the fox that came to eat them.
-
@dwd I tried the midnight stakeout technique with the rats, but they just laughed at me and carried on eating plums off the lawn
-
@ciarang They laughed at you? I think you're meant to use night vision goggles, not strong hallucinogens.
-
@dwd But that doesn't sound like so much fun does it?
-
@nolan http://www.sieve.info/ has some details I think. And there's some support about for Thunderbird et al, I think.
-
@ciarang and the hat suits you
-
@mattj I think it'll be the first time for me too
-
@ciarang Don't you just want to charge up to North-east Canada next winter with a giant bag of salt to make the programme more exciting?
-
@dwd given how many times our competitor's products fall over .... that would be a bad idea.
-
@willsheward @dwd I couldn't help the timing, but it's true :)
-
@mattj I'm sure we can "do you a deal" should you decide to upgrade ;-)
-
@willsheward Thanks for the offer, I'd have taken it some months ago.
-
@willsheward Unfortunately it would be rather awkward now since I'm working on another server already :)
-
@ciarang Presumably you've been quick to take full credit for 132 tests passing flawlessly?
-
@dwd I'd like to, but another 57 only passed because a bad server clock made one VM run the previous nightly build instead of my masterpiece
-
@ciarang Draft a mail: "My testing of the QA system is now complete, and I'm disappointed in the results..."
-
@ciarang Indeed, I'm amazed at how little snow it takes to shut down the capital.
-
@ciarang Is that as a result of you doing anything, or just because Google Moves In Mysterious Ways?
-
@dwd It's because of the layoffs. Those HR people were holding it all together.
-
@dwd I did nothing, so I assume they fixed whatever they broke
-
@ciarang And in the process broke everything else?
-
@ciarang my browser/computer is NOT responsible for the incredible difference in speed between 0.6.x and 0.7 - it was just fine now unusable
-
@marjoleink Well I don't know about anything else (can't tell the difference myself) but typing in an edit box?
-
@marjoleink There would have to be some *really* bad javascript going on to cause that
-
@ciarang well the javascript must've changed - it wasn't like this at all before the upgrade
-
@ciarang They hired Goldilocks to do the analysis?
-
@ciarang It's mostly uninformed; it's a PHP 4 supporting behemoth that's ugly to customise.
-
@michaeltwofish Fair comment. I don't like it when I have to hack at the code, but the same goes for any long-established PHP project
-
@ciarang I guess I'm spoiled with Habari. Many ways to easily customise.
-
@ciarang I want the same thing from a wiki.
-
@michaeltwofish @marjoleink I don't want to rain on your Wikkia parade but even that leading edge platform supports, wait for it - PHP 4.1 !
-
@ciarang I'll offer £000,000.
-
@ciarang Marvellous - the "Random Image" was "Pheasant hatching". Excellently ironic juxtapositioning.
-
@ciarang Samba is one of those things you configure by randomly changing things until it does something usable, then backing away slowly.
Evan Prodromou likes this. -
@dwd After an hour of doing that, I have discovered that "server signing = auto" is inexplicably NOT the default. (client is!?) Now it works
-
@ciarang I'd say it all works on Wife Logic, except that'd probably get me into trouble.
-
@dwd Sorry, what? Wife.... Logic.... does not compute. File next to Mule Cooperativeness
-
@ciarang FYI, Tikkabilla also had the variously-shaped windows, for those of us with ~7 year olds.
-
@ciarang Tikkabilla also had the interestingly athletic blonde lass. Curses to sports bras, ruins kid's TV for dads.
-
@ciarang You really say "Dang"?
-
@dwd Dang right I do, you crazy varmint
-
@dwd Really Obvious False Laugh
-
