sorry #Microsoft but "barely good enough" only works when you set the bar & have a monopoly, not when others set the bar & actually compete
- Alex Maurin likes this.
- Sander repeated this.
-
@thistleweb when did Microsoft ever make something any barely good? Barely working is more likely.
-
@sandersch when the consumer doesn't know what to expect, the low bar can be sold as "great"
-
@sandersch folks know iOS & Android, they know what a smartphone CAN do, WP7 is like 2yrs behind tech
-
@thistleweb I thought that WP8 was 2yrs behind.
-
@sandersch on desktops & laptops, all folks know is Windows, so they assume it's the best it can be, and EVERY OS is worse or the same
-
@sandersch with phones, MS are saying theirs is a realistic alternate to the top Android & iOS which it's clearly not, it's just laughable
-
@thistleweb hopefully exposure to mobile OSs will introduce many to the fact that alternatives are available
-
android is awesome, because it does expose people to something better. it’s actually getting deep market penetration
-
unlike desktop and server linux, which dont really reach consumer markets except through us freetard hackers ;)
-
@kevingranade I have to admit to some pessimism there - far too many people are unaware that there are alternatives to the iPad
-
@kevingranade it does, & people are used to what iOS & Android can do, which is why WP7 is DOA, it'd be fine a few yrs back, not now
-
@expatpaul @kevingranade Really? People at nearby Best Buy stores seem to ask for “Android” ... at least when I’m there. cc: @thistleweb
-
@kevingranade they won't see WP7 and assume that's the pinnacle of smartphones, they have several side by side comparisons to prove it's not
-
@kevingranade most folks already have a smartphone, so when it's not even as good as their old 2yr old phone, let alone new models
-
@thistleweb unfortunately the alternatives are both HEAVILY locked down, which is seen as the norm now, very frustrating.
-
@lnxwalt smartphones bar was set by Apple, Android is on par on it's own merits, the others are waaaaay behind in so many ways
-
@kevingranade for a startup, WP7 would be seen as a great intro / starting step, but for #Microsoft it's pitiful, given the vast wealth
-
@kevingranade yep
-
@thistleweb Actually, having used #WebOS before I got my #Android, I’d say that Android and iPhone are way behind.
-
@thistleweb I would have loved my Android if I’d gotten it before the Palm Pre. Instead, every day I want to smash this phone.
-
@lnxwalt it's the whole package, not just the OS, without a user base there's no apps, without apps theres no user base
-
@kevingranade @thistleweb I also hate that I have to root my phone in order to remove carier’s junkware. I’d switch…
-
@thistleweb Agree. However, I think MSFT haven’t a clue about how to make a good mobile OS yet.
-
@lnxwalt not sure who else could enter with a new OS and thrive, but we dev need at least one more entrant
-
@lnxwalt it's not just hemorrhaging cash into building the OS and apps, it's all the patent extortion at every turn
-
@thistleweb Mozilla?
-
@sandersch I'd doubt it, but maybe, given the way they're pushing for web standards
-
@lnxwalt I have encountered a surprising number of people who assume all tablets are iPads.
-
@expatpaul Actually, if I’m out somewhere with tablet, ppl do ask if it is an iPad, but then I tell them about Android.
-
@expatpaul My goal being the promotion of a diverse market in mobile devices, so that industry has to create open standards.
-
I hope @thistleweb and @kevingranade would agree that letting any one vendor or OS get too much share is a bad thing.
-
@lnxwalt of course, real & fair competition is good for everyone
-
@lnxwalt well, except those who have gotten where they are by not competing, treating folks like criminals etc - it's not good for them
-
@lnxwalt I completely agree with you there
-
@lnxwalt That's my experience too. People don't think about alternatives unless you point out that they exist
-
@expatpaul that’s true, which led to a lot of speculation about the future. Foundation is interesting in that it’s …
