@evan I think http://ur1.ca/8g8rl is an elaborate effort to #troll @bkuhn
about a year ago from web-
...or using github?
-
The license, you mean?
-
@evan both of course. But seriously, looks very interesting.
-
Thanks. First in a series of services I'm rolling out to make #fsw stuff easier. Spam is killer for public StatusNet sites.
-
@fontana @evan, Many #Conservancy projects using #github has sadly desensitized me. I'm even a user: https://github.com/bkuhn *shudder*.
-
Actually, we're the upstream. I'm drifting toward using Apache more often.
-
There are a few reasons, here. First, in JavaScript community, permissive licenses are a bigger part of the culture.
-
Thus, more likely to get contributors from that community.
-
Second, because we're doing so much with standards. I think similar situation to Ogg Vorbis here http://ur1.ca/49yr4
-
Third, because I've found myself blocked in some business decisions by copyleft w/out full copyright ownership on our core product.
-
@evan FWIW I agree that permissive licensing is a better option than CA or similar when that happens.
-
...so I'd like to keep my options open until I've decided how or when to commercialize a project.
-
I started using github because it had a lower profile for me than gitorious.org.
-
@evan Are you admitting here to a desire for what @bkuhn would call proprietary relicensing? #trulynotatroll
-
This looks like a thread with good popcorn potential.
-
oh no!, keep away yourself from that vicious circle of selling free software as proprietary software!!
-
I mean here what @rms calls "selling license exceptions" http://identi.ca/url/6860048
-
Not in particular, although I think it's a good source of income for copyleft companies that have a CLA and/or full copyright.
-
@evan agree w/ @kevingranade. Noncopyleft here ethically the right choice.
-
To be clearer, selling exceptions !problematic too but in case of #Cygwin there are additional ethical justifications extrinsic to free sw
-
Ultimately it comes down to that when I'm working on a new project I want to have maximum flexibility later on.
-
@fontana ...so a permissive license while I figure things out seems like a reasonable compromise.
-
I think my alternatives (copyleft everything or don't release source till I know what kind of community dynamics I want) are worse.
-
@fontana ultimately I think that ActivitySpam is a good candidate for AGPL business-wise.
-
@evan the only potential problem I see is attracting community during early development with permissive, then alienating them with copyleft.
-
@evan extremely theoretical of course, and diffused by the openness you display.
-
Yes, I understand that. While I'm working on my own, it's less of a big deal.
-
@bkuhn moral friction? Interesting terminology!
-
Totally understandable!
-
Main issue here is that had I known your view a few weeks ago,I wouldn't have invited you to the "copyleft nutters" dinner at #LibrePlanet.☺

@x1101, I just made it up. I was trying to figure out how to describe the moral certainty & resolve to not fall down the "slippery soap".

@lnxwalt can either apply to slippery slopes, or p0rn, either way.
-
Oh, yes you would.
