The !FSF believes in so much openness they don’t even seal the envelopes they mail me :)
- Evan Prodromou and Christopher Allan Webber like this.
-
@parlementum hahaha! Funny.
-
:D
-
@parlementum Did you mean OSI?
-
Except, they don't believe in "openness". They speak on part of a movement for software freedom.
-
@jacobwb I believe that Bruce Perens and @webmink both have said the the #OSD was meant to be a restatement of the #fourfreedoms.
-
@jacobwb I think people willfully misunderstand this for financial and political motives. #OpenSource meant to be approx == #FreeSoftware.
-
@jacobwb I was making a joke about an unsealed envelope – my receipt for FSF membership as it happens- lighten up
-
That's all well and good, but it doesn't change the fact that the Free Software Foundation has never been about "openness".
-
@parlementum good evening. how have you fared? feeling okay? i’m feeling refreshed after a much needed shower.
-
@coyo hay fever and bronchitis is a rotten combination. I’m miserable right now.
-
awww. i hope you feel better, @parlementum
-
@lnxwalt when it comes to the software, yes. when it comes to social and ethical movements, it engineered the essence out
-
@lnxwalt the basic premise of !freesoftware is that denying freedoms = mistreating users => wrong. OSS dismissed this issue
ossi1967 likes this. -
@lnxwalt The OSD defines what content a license must minimally have to deliver the four freedoms.
-
@lxoliva Oh please. This rhetoric does not advance software freedom.
-
Sophist: one of those who, by their fallacious but plausible reasoning, puzzled inquirers after truth, weakened the faith of the people… ;-)
-
@webmink knowing history is a good way to avoid repeating the same mistakes. anyway, most OSS proponents still sidestep the key issue
-
@metztli while he may have made some progress within OSI, I'm afraid OSS as promoted by the initial OSI is a victim of its own “success”
-
@metztli as in, it became a popular term to distort so as to promote proprietary agendas while looking good, much like eco* greenwashing
-
@webmink and how does attempting to silence the “rhetoric” AKA core software freedom principles advance software freedom?
-
@lxoliva It doesn't. But neither does emphasising divisions.
-
@metztli That would be offensive even if I wasn't unemployed.
-
@webmink you're not employed at Forgerock anymore? :-(
-
@sandersch No, I left in December. Hence all the odds & ends of writing & consulting. Available for engagements :-)
-
@lxoliva Based on the current scene, I mean this nasty western production system, there is greater social justice in transparency.
-
@lxoliva Transparency carries the truth, unavoidably.
-
@lxoliva whereas freedom at this very historical moment, tends to strengthen bourgeois Liberalism.
-
@lxoliva Again, based on the current western production system.
-
@webmink recognizing infiltrated wolves is quite important IMHO. far more important than silently going along with them
-
@webmink furthermore, de-emphasizing the core principles is *precisely* what created the problem in the first place
-
@webmink dismissing differences is the 1st trick in the book on getting people to work against their own best interests
-
@mbjunior you seem to imply freedom and transparency are at odds with each other
-
@mbjunior as for the perception that freedom strengthens one group in detriment of another, that might be out of confusing freedom and power
-
@lxoliva am not implying that, sir, it's about priorities; freedom, which is important, indeed, must assume at some point; not now.
-
@lxoliva Also, I'm not confusing things. I know what I told you constitutes one striking truth. Take your time to understand it.
-
@mbjunior sorry, that sort of proof by “I say so” carries no hope of convincing anyone ;-) care to elaborate and back it up?
-
@mbjunior if we were to give up freedom now (implied by “freedom doesn't matter now”), what's your plan to recover it later when it does?
-
@lxoliva See, man, the problem in representing some entity boils down to an eternal dilemma [TO_BE_CONTINUED]...
-
... [CONTINUING] that is: the chains imprisoning you to the conflict between being a militant and adopting a sincere posture.
-
Noo. One must NEVER give up his freedom, man. Do not be simplistic. I'm talkin about priorities vs historical moments.
-
@lxoliva of course everything I'm telling ya makes sense in the pursuit of equal opportunities to all, as a main goal, above any other goals
