Yep, or the number of people who are suprised when I tell them that Android *is* Linux. Sigh...
-
It bugs me that I can't find any mention of "Linux" on the #Ubuntu web site. We must educate users and start calling it Linux/Ubuntu :)
-
@sazius Ubuntu/Linux ? Ubuntu + GNU + Linux et al ?
-
I guess going from more high-level to more low-level would indeed be Ubuntu/Linux or FSF would probably prefer Ubuntu/GNU/Linux :-)
-
Pragmatically, these days, you'd want to know the GUI/userland/kernel combo. I mean people can e.g. run BSD kernel with GNU and Gnome 3.
-
Hence, we need to take a hint from @rms and start talking about GoogleOS/Linux or Ubuntu/GNU/Linux etc... :-)
-
@sazius it's been like that for at least 2 yrs. When I first started using Linux, it was "Ubuntu: Linux for Human Beings" I think.
-
I can understand that they don't want to put "boring technical details" up front to consumers, but at least mention it *somewhere*.
-
Anyhow, I'm going to call it Ubuntu/Linux from now on ;-)
-
@sazius there's "boring technical details" & there's the entire foundation of the OS. A detail would be kernel version number, e.g. :)
-
@sazius that's the right thing to do, or else just never mention it again. :P
-
@sazius Always, when I wanted to be correct I called it Ubuntu GNU/Linux
-
Well, I'm sure most Mac users don't know what kernel their OS is running on :-)
-
@sazius yes true for probably 99% of 'em. Most Ubuntu users used to know but I think their goal now is to make them forget.
-
Yeah. I also thought about the fact that some people that would ridicule the "GNU/" are now upset when Ubuntu aren't mentioning Linux.
-
True & sad. Ubuntu is great for drawing in a lot of people to free sw, but also a lot of people have then become part of larger community.
-
That would be very Lovecraftian: The Linux Distribution Not To Be Named.
-
@sazius Ubuntumort
-
I prefer literary references from the 1920's :-)
-
@sazius I've never read Lovecraft. \o/
-
Oh noes! I do like Lovecraft myself though, but he has a bad rep because of all the clichés and bad pastishes made later :-)
-
I like the "scifi horror", where the horror isn't something supernatural but humanity's insignificance in the cosmos :-)
-
I also like his descriptions of New England. I'd love to visit Providence etc some day and see if it looks as nice as it sounds :-)
-
@jonkulp you need to fix that, yesterday
-
@sazius I checked a collection of his stories out of the library but didn't get to it in time & had to return it.
-
Most of them are public domain on the interwebs,if you don't mind reading from a computer/tablet/ebook http://hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/
gryps75 likes this. -
@sazius I'll put a few on my phone. :)
-
Yay :-) "The Call of Cthulhu" is the most famous, so probably a good starting point. For "cosmic horror" nothing beats …
-
@sazius ok that one is on my phone now.
-
@jonkulp @sazius “The call of Cthulhu” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHyy4a4SVa0
-
@sazius does it bug you any more than it does when you can't any find mention of GNU on most sites about GNU systems with kernel Linux?
-
@sazius Android isn't Linux any more than GNU is Linux. Linus didn't write Android, and he didn't write GNU, but both run with Linux
-
Estou correto ???
-
Hello mate nice to hear you even if I do not understand your mother tongue.
-
As I said later in the thread, it's funny that some people who ridiculed the "GNU/" are now upset about the missing "/Linux" :-)
-
But your theory is that we should talk about the highest level in the OS stack? So Gnome OS, or KDE OS? :-)
-
Yeah, that's a great song :-)
-
When I first saw you dented a youtube link, I thought for sure it must be this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DsgZ4JXXB8
-
@satipera Hehehehehehehehe, I guess portuguese sounds poetic, uh ??? ;-D
-
I know it is not Portuguese but it holds for us all... vive la difference.
-
-
@sazius yeah. I wrote long ago that Ubuntu pulled a Linux on Linux ;-)
-
@sazius no. if we're talking kernels, it's kernels; if we're speaking of OSs, speak of OSs. fruits and seeds aren't the same
-
@sazius GNOME is part of the GNU system, BTW
-
-
@satipera Oui!!! Actually I'm testing Hotot 4 PCLinuxOS(I made the package, so, it's my baby…)
-
@sazius GNOME and KDE are desktop environments, not operating systems, not kernels. compare flowers, fruits and seeds
-
-
Damn, and I thought I was original :-)
-
Although, for a non-technical end user it is much more important if it is e.g. Gnome or KDE, that what the kernel is for example :-)
-
-
@sazius y, naming the kernel is mostly irrelevant for users; most GNU/* distros offer several desktop envos for users to choose
-
-
@sazius anyway, user relevance is not what determines what the operating system or the kernel are ;-)
-
Certainly not, but when I talk about "operating systems" with my non-techie friends, they are most interested in user-facing GUI.
-
@sazius most users can't even tell hardware from software. they will speak of PCs (=Windows), iPhones, and so on
-
Good point. People look confused when I tell them I want to install another operating system on my Android phone or ADSL router :-)
-
@sazius me, I've confused many a warranty service of computer manufacturers asking for details on “no replacing operating system” rules
-
@sazius like, “is it ok if I keep the original GNU/Linux install in a small partition, and install another on the rest of the disk?”
-
@sazius and after getting a hesitant negative, “you mean I can't install on this computer any software that's not preinstalled?” :-D
-
@sazius “so, if I update kernel or other low-level operating system components, e.g. for security fixes, you'll void the warranty?”
-
@sazius “so, it's ok to install other kernels and operating system components, but only on the original partition? what about Live CDs?”
-
@sazius it gets even more interesting when they pass me on to their lawyer :-) sadly, only the confused face changes, and only slightly
-
Really, nowhere on the site? Definitely not here: http://ur1.ca/94ha6 <-- The most obvious place for it. !fs !linux
-
I'm more upset that there isn't a mention of GNU or FSF on that page, they mention GNOME, but not GNU.
-
Ah, you found a reference. Great! I was reading the promo material on the new release, but couldn't find anything.
-
Heh, I'd imagine that the lawyer would be even more confused :-)
-
@lxoliva Sem dúvida…
