      @expatpaul I have a theory that networks only join internetworks when the internetwork is bigger.

      @evan You're probably right there.

      @evan It's mad though, because by the time one of these networks starts trying to join the wider interweb it's already too late

      Thank goodness you understand what federation is and what it isn’t. I spent so much time discussing this with Dick Turpin I doubted myself.

      Federation is a dirty word to Dick Turpin.

      It's a shame, because he's so very very wrong. Besides, he likes all of the other dirty words. :)

      I’m not sure it’s a ‘dirty’ word and I know he’s not a techie but his complete lack of understanding on this issue genuinely staggers me.

      I suppose that, as a former http://ur1.ca/1 user, he may not have felt the need to understand what federation is all ab…

      Incidentally, my previous dent was 268 characters. My self-imposed limit of 280 characters is perfect for my needs, an…

      @thelovebug Incidentally, selectable character limits is one of the things I talk about with people … switching from T & SMS-based 140 cap

      @thelovebug ... it is a pity that so many #identicats chose Twitter-following tradition over clarity. All #StatusNeticians would benefit.

      I love my 500 char limit.

      I've left the limit at 140 to remove the ellipsis possibility, and as a discipline measure: I tend to get wordy. :)

      @windigo I set mine at 300. I see on #Denticator that my avr dent is 97 characters long.

      @andyc I never understood what his problem was. I missed any original complaints, only ever caught offhand quips.

      I no longer care about the 140 char argument. Time, software and identi.ca has moved on.

      I set mine to 340, that way I can use more if I need to, but I know it'll be "ellipsised" if I've got less than 200 left in the counter :-)

      @thelovebug just checked and identica still shows #showmore at #119 not #140 - please adjust, @evan.

      I think that's true, but it also means there's a lot of opportunity for small players.

      @evan Agreed. And I think that this is a good thing - a diversity of small players is far healthier than an oligopoly of behemoths
