New !EMail Client #Geary Launches on !Linux — some would say we already have too many but… :) http://ping.fm/tGldA
about a year ago from Ping.fm- Martín Casco, Jose R Rodriguez and Tobias repeated this.
-
@kopolee11 I was going to try it, but changing Email clients is a lot of work, so it'll have to wait
-
Hmm… it has a long way to go, in my opinion… but it does look extremely promising.
-
But _why_ has it HTML Mail support? :(
-
because mothers sisters and girlfriends insist on composing emails in smilies and comic sans?
Cyber Killer and Vecchio Balordo like this. -
Because people use rich text formatting in the real world.
-
@fuquer Businesses are a far bigger offender--glossy magazine-like HTML mail and even JPEG signatures.
-
@silner Is that another step towards 'apping' the desktop?
-
true. it's the very reason I don't open my "news letters" that I keep forgetting to unsubscribe on my smartphone - they clog up the tubes.
-
@industrialrobot you can use rtf without it being html.
-
@kopolee11 and in the long run it would be even better to drop POP3, #IMAP and SMTP and switch e-mail to !XMPP :-)
Vecchio Balordo likes this. -
@cyberkiller Interesting, I didn't even know that was a possibility. What would be the improvements of switching to !XMPP?
-
@kopolee11 ...easier server setup, speed, better authentication options, standard character encoding, better privacy control & probably more
-
I think e-mail is perfect as it is. XMPP has a bunch of extra stuff that the "xmpp-mail" style usage never should use. …
-
Separating usage by protocols and even clients is a great way to avoid centralization as well as actually using a proto…
-
@cyberkiller Once again, very interesting. Wouldn't that pracitcally fuse iming and emailing? Kinda what Facebook has done with chat?
-
@mmn e-mail currently IMHO is a mess of old ideas and protocolls that struggle in the current internet (e.g. spam & security problems)
-
You don't get rid of spam and security problems by changing the protocol...
-
@mmn you do in this case - faking the sender is the main 'entry' for spam in e-mail today and xmpp has mechanisms against this
-
@cyberkiller @kopolee11 I've always preferred IMAP when it's available
-
@silner IMAP is cool, but the only free mail provider that gives IMAP is google, everywhere else it's POP only
-
@cyberkiller not true. Lavabit offers IMAP. GMX probably does, too.
-
@cyberkiller Actually I think Fastmail & Opera Mail might still provide it. I shoulda checked, but I think they still do
-
@cyberkiller You should try Mailoo, then. It's a free IMAP/POP3 email provider and its built in free/libre software - http://www.mailoo.org
-
@cyberkiller I meant, I'm sure about Fastmail cos I use it, but I could be outa date on Opera Mail
-
@jankusanagi GMX offers IMAP (imap.gmx.com)
-
@cyberkiller mail.com gives you IMAP too ;-)
-
Gmail and Lavabit support IMAP, too
-
It's not so much the (wire) protocol that matters, but the overall architecture of !XMPP was designed from very early t…
